Dear Dr. Dayrit,

I am writing this letter to express my intent to apply for the program Doctor to the Barrios, which I learned through a
colleague who is currently working under the program.

Health care system in the Philippines is way behind compared to other countries. To be able to get the best
treatment, it depends on one’s socio-economic status. The ones who are blessed with money or connection can
readily have access to healthcare unlike those who aren’t it can be very difficult to go even for just a consult. Though
some health care professionals do their best to give the patient the best health care sometimes its not always the
case. This is what I witnessed back when I had my clerkship at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center at Manila. It
was during this time that I developed an interest in community medicine where Filipinos can go for a co sult and
Filipinos can become an active partner when it comes to their health. And with the passing of Universal Health Care
Law, the DTTB program can be a big help with its implementation so every Filipino can have an access to quality
healthcare.

During my internship at Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center I had the opportunity to rotate in a rural
health unit which strengthened my desire be a rural health physician. I was lucky to have rotated in a rural health
unit that have programs that are attainable and I want to share it with other rural health unit. I understand that
being a rural health physician you have to be able to communicate well with the members of the community and
one thing that I learned from my community rotation is dealing with a diverse culture and understanding their
beliefs and incorporating science into their beliefs.

Before studying for doctor of medicine, I also worked as a pharmacist at a community pharmacy. My work entails me
to do stock inventories. I am also responsible for ordering medicines based on the business’ current expenses and
the community’s demand. With these experience, I know that it will help me become an effective rural health
physician.

I have learned from my colleague about the masteral study one will undergo under the doctor to the barrio program
to which I am very interested. I am confident that this will allow me to gain the necessary skills to complement the
skills needed to become an effective rural health physician while educating my patients on disease prevention. This
program will definitely help me polish my interpersonal skills and achieve commitment through bringing my
enthusiasm, hard work, and compassion to my patients.
I have enclosed my personal data sheet for you to review. I look forward to hearing from you as well as working with
other health professionals in what will be a mutually beneficial rendering experience.

Sincerely,

DOREEN P. BOSLENG, MD
