- Critical reading skills are used in understanding academic texts
- Critical reading allows you to think beyond what is presented
ANNOTATING
- Highlighting or underlining key words or ideas in the text and writing short explanations
or comments along the margins on the page
OUTLINING
- This is presenting the important main details in a particular text
ANALYZING
- This is examining the content by breaking down the different elements of the text. You
can also divide a text into different sections for more focus
SUMMARIZING
- This is giving the gist of a text

- Attempting to use the ideas, words, or work done earlier by someone else, without giving
them due credit

- Copying another’s entire paper and claiming it as one’s own.
WHY ARE CITATIONS IMPORTANT?
- To avoid plagiarism and unethical claims to what you have not discovered or contributed
- To respect the intellectual property of the owner
- To help the reader trace and track down the sources of your information
HERE ARE SOME VARIOUS WAYS ON HOW TO PREVENT PLAGIARISM
- Giving credit to the original writers will not exactly prevent plagiarism but they can be
used to lessen the impact of plagiarism.
CITATION STYLES
APA (American Psychological Association)
- Used for social sciences.
MLA (Modern Language Association
- Liberal arts and humanities.
CMS (Chicago Manual of Style)
- Used in the publishing industry. CMS has guides for correct grammar, documentation,
and writing.
