HERSEY AND BLANCHARD SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP

R1. TELLING ( high task/ low relationship behavior )

 The leader provides specific instructions on what to do and how to do it.

Example: The leader must help and guide to the new members/teachers who are
inexperienced and need a lot of help, direction, and encourage them to get the job done.

R2. SELLING ( high task/high relationship behavior )

 The leader provides clear direction but there is two-way communication. The leader will
explain or “sell” the reasons for executing a task in a particular way instead of simply telling
them what to do.

Example: Members are a little more responsible, experienced, and willing to do the task but
do not have the necessary skills. The leader provides followers with supportive instructions,
but is also supportive.

R3. PARTICIPATING ( high relationship/ low task behavior )

 The leader collaborates with their team members and seeks their input on what to do and
how to do it. They provide less direction but are still supporting and building
confidence.

Example: Groups have the ability to do the job but unwilling to start or complete the task.
Both leader and followers share their decisions about how best to complete the job.

R4. DELEGATING ( low relationship/ low task behavior )

 The leader passes most of the responsibility to their team members and lets them decide
what to do and how to do it. The leader stays involved to monitor progress.

Example: They are self-sufficient and competent. Leaders must provides little specific, close
direction personal support to the followers.
