● Stages of Sleep
● We cycle through five stages of sleep in roughly 90 minute cycles
● Stages 1-4 is non-REM sleep.
○ No eye movement, fewer dreams
● Stage 5 is REM sleep
○ Vivid dreams and quick eye movements

● Stage 1
● 5-10 minute stage when you first fall asleep
● Theta waves
○ Theta → 4-7 seconds
○ Beta → 13 seconds (alert)
○ Alpha → 8-12 seconds (relaxed)
● Hypnagogic imagery
● Myoclonic jerks

● Stage 2
● 10-30 minutes
● Sleep spindles
○ Sudden intense burst of electrical activity
○ 12-14 seconds
● K-complexes
○ Sharply rising and falling waves
● Brain activity slows down, heart rate slows, body temp decreases, muscles relax,
eye movement stops
● As much as 65% of total sleep

● Stages 3 and 4
● After 10-30 minutes= deeper, slower wave sleep
● Delta waves
○ 1-2 seconds
○ Stage 3 = 20-50% of the time
○ Stage 4 = over 50% of the time
● Crucial to feel rested
● Suppressed by alcohol
● Stage 5
● Return to stage 2 then shift to stage 5
○ High frequency, low amplitude
○ Looks like awake brain waves
● REM sleep
● Brain activity similar to wakefulness
● 10-20 minutes, then we go back to earlier stages and start the cycle again
● Becomes longer as the night goes on (up to 45 mins to an hour)
● 5-6 cycles per night (fig. 5, pg 168)

● REM facts
● Paradoxical because our bodies are paralyzed but our brains are active
○ Why is this a good thing? (hint: RBD)
■ 1:200: more common for men over 50
● REM rebound occurs when we don’t rest well for several nights
● Function of the eye movements is unknown
○ Scanning our dreams?
○ But blind since people also have REM
● Muscles in middle ear are also active (MEMA)
