Rationale

The outbreak of the coronavirus and its worldwide spread was considered an
unexpected crisis that the W.H.O or World Health Organization estimates that between
80,000 and 180,000 people could have died as a result of the virus in the time between
January 2020 and May 2021, which a substantial impact on healthcare personnel.
Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases are on the rise in the Philippines, posing a risk to local
health and healthcare staff due to a lack of understanding about this new disease.
According to the Filipino Nurses United Cebu City Chapter (FNU), nurses from private
and public hospitals are threatening to resign due to the risk and low pay for such work.
In accordance with the DAILY NEWS, hundreds of nurses in Cebu have resigned owing
to the stress. In addition, medical professionals continue to earn less money than other
jobs, starting with healthcare professionals working during the pandemic for comparable
pay. For this study, the researchers aim to analyze our topic which is to uncover the
lives of our medical professionals here in the Philippines as our study contributes to the
so far scarce knowledge on nurses’ and other medical professionals’ pandemic-related
stress and well-being in combination with their resources. Increasing the population's
access to high-quality healthcare requires the involvement of health professionals.
Medical professionals offer fundamental services that support wellness, fight disease
prevention, and provide primary health care to people, families, and communities. The
researchers believe that medical professionals are essential but undervalued, especially
in times of pandemic. Lived experience perspectives can be used to collaboratively
identify gaps or issue areas, develop research questions, analyze empirical findings,
remark on actual deficiencies, assess what implications mean for them and whether
they are genuinely relevant, and aid in future decision-making. The researchers want to
uncover their stories and experiences so they to help address and voice concerns, for
future and present generations to be aware of what has happened, to give fairness and
justice to those workers, and for the people not to take medical professionals for
granted and to aid in giving enough resources and supplies to the health care
professionals.

Methodology

Design, locale, and respondents

This research is regarding the lived experiences of medical professionals during the
covid-19 pandemic in the year 2020 to present and a proposal that aims to increase
wages and benefits of our medical professionals throughout the country. This qualitative
research was generated thereof, in the locality of Cebu City, Philippines, and Filipino
nurses working abroad. This was set forth by SHS students, specifically from Gr. 11 of
Bl. Peter Gubbio during the months of January and February. The researchers have
accumulated a total of 40 medical professionals consisting of local and Overseas
Filipino medical professional workers throughout the world. These respondents were
mainly around the ages of 25 to 51.

Instruments and Procedures

The instruments that the researchers used to make this successful were the survey and
questionnaires. This survey and questionnaires were created through google forms in
order for easy use and quick dissemination. This survey was conducted and handed out
to medical professionals through the locality of Cebu City and Overseas Filipino medical
professionals workers across the world. The researchers chose social media,
specifically Messenger since it is easily accessible to everyone. This ease of access
allowed them to distribute their survey to medical professionals all around the world.
The questions survey's main goal is to get the side of our medical professionals on their
lived experiences during the covid-19 pandemic in the year 2020 to present, and with
their cooperation and dedication to helping the researchers achieve successful
research. Rest assured this research will go smoothly and slowly find its way into being
considered successful research. Questions provided will be answered through the
Bipolar Likert scale. Choices present are the following: (1) as Strongly Disagree, (2) as
Disagree, (3) as Neutral (4) as Agree, and lastly (5) as Strongly Agree. When answers
from our medical professionals have been gathered it will be tabulated using the
probability distribution table and histograms to express the involvement of statistics and
its end results. The findings of each questionnaire question's related probability
distribution table and histogram will be produced and examined. Probabilistic
distributions let us model our reality by estimating the likelihood of a given event
occurring or the variability of occurrence. They're a common way of characterizing or
maybe forecasting the likelihood of an occurrence. Two practical uses of probability
distributions are computing confidence intervals for parameters and determining crucial

4
areas for hypothesis testing. It may also be used to determine the most likely outcomes,
the range of potential values, and the likelihood of alternate options. The researchers
then selected a variable at random to represent in the histogram. To summarize, the
variable x represents the 5-point scale choices (strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree,
and strongly disagree), and the variable p(x) shows the number of times the students
chose the provided alternatives. By using the formula μ=Σx•P(x) the mean of a discrete
variable is calculated; this also includes multiplying each random variable, x, by its
associated probability, P(x), and then adding the products. To calculate the difference
between each outcome and the mean, square it, and multiply it by the likelihood of that
occurrence. Finally, using the formula [(x2-Px)] - μ^2, the standard deviation of a
probability distribution is computed. To calculate the standard deviation () of a
probability distribution, find each departure from its anticipated value, square it, multiply
it by its probability, add the products, and then take the square root. The study was
characterized as Convenience Sampling by the researchers because the data came
from people who were easy to find and contact; the respondents were mostly people
that the researchers knew or people who the other respondents knew. The researchers
then divided the questions into parts. In each table, several columns and rows display
the number of respondents, sections, how many respondents responded to the various
survey options, the fraction form, and finally the percentage of the results answered in
each choice. As a result, calculating and retrieving the mean, variance, and standard
deviation for each provided question was simple.

Data Gathering and Procedure

Data gathering was made possible when the researchers chose a qualitative topic: The
lived experiences of medical professionals during the covid-19 pandemic in the year
2020 to present was approved. The team leader was able to disseminate group work to
its researchers to mark it as a start of a research journey. With the help of the existing
published articles, works, and research the researchers were able to find something that
can back up their study which made the research more feasible but with a mix of hard
work.
From the gathered information researchers were able to come up with five questions for
their questionnaire that will be handed out online to our Filipino medical workers working
locally and abroad and will be answered with the Bipolar Likert scale. With the help of
internet forwarding the survey was made easy and accessible with just a touch.
Reaching out to medical workers was made possible considering some researchers
have connections. The results gathered through the survey were used to act as
evidence and will be presented and shown to every individual. To show that this
research is valid and not made up just to ensure some rules and regulations are
changed.

Conclusion

Using the data tabulated from our survey questionnaire, the researchers have
discovered that in the Demographic Profile: Age, 7 medical professionals out of the 40
people who responded were between the ages of 25 and 30 (or 17.5%), 20 were
between the ages of 31 and 36, 12 were between the ages of 37 and 48, and only one
was over the age of 50. The ages 36 and 48 yielded the highest number of results, with
both having the same results (12.5%). On the other hand, the ages 25, 27, 28, 37, 38,
39, and 51 collected only 0.5 percent of the results. Demographic Profile: Sex/Gender,
demonstrates that there are more men than women participating. 28 out of 40
participants are female, while 30 percent (12 out of 40) are male. In Demographic
Profile: Medical Profession, according to the frequency table, the majority of the 40
medical professionals who responded to the survey were nurses, with 31 respondents
(77.5%). The remaining medical professions—Midwife, Medical Technologist, and
EMT—had only one respondent each, while 4 out of 40 respondents were Nursing
Attendants (10 percent), 2 out of 40 respondents were Ward Assistants (5 percent), and
neither were Doctors, Paramedics, or Pharmacists. Demographic Profile: Hospital
(Private and Government), shows that a government hospital employs 90% of the 40
respondents, while a private hospital employs 10%. Medical professionals' working
preferences and choices differ significantly, as shown by the aforementioned data.

We have concluded from the survey questions that the frequency of answers in a
histogram that appears in Question 1's table above shows the collected responses,
which include a total of 40 responses to the given question. The graph shows that 18
medical professionals, or 45% of the sample, agreed, which is the most responses to
this question followed by the strongly agreed option, which received the second highest
response rate from 16 medical professionals (40 percent). There were three medical
professionals who responded in a neutral (10 percent) manner, two medical
professionals who responded in a strongly disagreeing (5%) manner, and none of the
40 respondents disagreed. The average response falls within the range of Agree (4) for
medical professionals who were offered numerous job opportunities due to the high
demand for medical professionals. The data points are very close to the mean, or we
can say that the average is consistent, because the variance is at 0.93, which means
that the variability is low. Additionally, the standard deviation is 0.96, which is centered
very close to the mean. The Mean is 4.15, the Variance is 0.9275, and the Standard
Deviation is 0.96. Its Variance is low at 0.9275 and its Standard Deviation is 0.96,
meaning that the data is very closely related to the average, thus very reliable. Question
2, the collective response from the forty responses to the given question is depicted in
the histogram above. There are two choices in the graph: neutral and agree received
the most responses—13 out of 40 respondents, or 32.5% of the time—from the

35
question. The strongly agreed option came in second, with 12 medical professionals
responding (30%). With one medical professional expressing disagreement (2.5%), and
another medical professional expressing strong disagreement (2.5%). The average
response for medical workers who received free lodging, transportation, personal
protective equipment, and hazard pay is 2.97, which indicates that the response is
neutral (3). The data points are dispersed and far from the mean, or the values are less
consistent and reliable, as indicated by the high variance of 6.93 and the large standard
deviation of 2.63. The Mean is 2.97, the Variance is 6.9291, and the Standard Deviation
is 2.63. Its Variance is high at 6.93 and its Standard Variation is 2.63 means that there is
a large variance between the data and the statistical average, and is not as reliable.
Question 3, the histogram above shows the gathered response from 40 answers given
by the respondents to the allotted question. In the graph, 14 out of 40 medical workers,
or 35% strongly agree with the question, garnering the highest amount of response.
Followed by the agreed option having the second highest results answered by 12
medical workers (30%). Another 9 medical workers responded neutral (22.5%), 4
medical workers strongly disagreed (10%), and lastly, only 1 medical worker disagreed
(2.5%). The mean number of medical workers who were given proper protection and
support like free lodging, transportation, PPE, and hazard pay is 3.78, meaning to say
that the average answer falls under Agree (4). The variance falls low at 1.49 and it has
a small standard deviation (1.22), indicating that the responses are clustered around the
mean or we can say that the values are more consistent and reliable. The Mean is 3.78,
the Variance is 1.4866, and the Standard Deviation is 1.22. Its Variance is high at
1.4866 and its Standard Variation is 1.22 means that there is a large variance between
the data and the statistical average, and is not as reliable. Question 4, the histogram
above shows the gathered response from 40 answers given by the respondents to the
allotted question. In the graph, the two options, namely: neutral and agree garnered the
highest amount of results, both accumulated 13 out of 40 respondents or 32.5% from
the question. Followed by the strongly agreed option having the second highest results
answered by 12 medical workers (30%). 1 medical worker answered disagree (2.5%),
and another 1 medical worker answered strongly disagree (2.5%). The mean medical
workers who were given a proper day off to rest and recover after duty and not work
24/7 is 3.63, meaning to say that the average answer falls under Agree (4). The
variance is at 1.5981 and it has a small standard deviation (2.63), indicating that the
data points are narrowly concentrated around the mean or we can say that the
distribution is reliable and consistent. The Mean is 3.63, the Variance is 1.5981, and the
Standard Variation is 1.26. Its Variance is high at 1.5981 and its Standard Deviation is
1.26 means that there is a large variance between the data and the statistical average,
and is not as reliable. Question 5, the histogram above shows the gathered response
from 40 answers given by the respondents to the allotted question. In the graph, most of
the respondents strongly agree with the question, accumulating 23 medical workers or

36
57.5%. Followed by the disagree and strongly disagree options, both having 5 medical
workers (12.5%), having the second highest results. 4 medical workers answered agree
(10%), and lastly, 3 medical workers answered neutral (7.5%). The mean number of
medical workers who got infected and/or had colleagues that got infected by the
COVID-19 virus is 3.88, meaning to say that the average answer falls under Agree (4).
The variance falls low at 2.2206 and it has a small standard deviation (1.49), indicating
that the data points are narrowly concentrated around the mean or we can say that the
distribution is reliable and consistent. The Mean is 3.88, the Variance is 2.2206, and the
Standard Deviation is 1.49. Its Variance is high at 2.2206 and its Standard Deviation is
1.49 means that there is a large variance between the data and the statistical average,
and is not as reliable.

Recommendation
This research is regarding the lived experiences of medical professionals during the
covid-19 pandemic in the year 2020 to present and a proposal that aims to increase
wages and benefits of our medical professionals throughout the country. As a result, the
following suggestions are made: (1) The government should provide a lot of job
opportunities for medical professionals to have a job and not lack money. (2) The
government or the private sector should give enough support or proper security and
assistance, such as free lodging, transportation, PPE, and hazard compensation. (3)
The government and private sector should save enough money and give enough
salaries to the medical professionals, and the medical professionals themselves should
give their best and do their work with their hearts. (4) They should provide or give
enough rest to the medical professionals for them to have the strength to work or to do
their work with enough presence of mind and energy. (5) We should take good care of
our medical professionals and also ourselves; we need to be alert enough to what is
happening around us for us to know how to react and be ready as always. (6) We
should determine how strongly sociodemographic and health factors are associated
with these outcomes for us to know how to deal with and overcome them. (7) health
workers or medical professionals should know how to react and deal with all the
problems they encounter and not lose hope in everything because many people are
relying on them. (8) We must know how to prioritize our health, ourselves, our loved
ones, and others. We should value each other and take good care of them. (9) We
should know what to prioritize first in the midst of a pandemic, and that is ourselves, for
us to have happy and healthy lives. (10) We should be careful, alert, and ready, and we
should extend our helping hands to others for a healthy and happy society and a world
to live in.
