    Assimilation is a process where one phoneme is replaced by another under the influence of an adjacent phoneme. There are three types of assimilation: regressive, where a prefix phoneme takes on the sound of the following phoneme; progressive, where a following phoneme is influenced by a preceding phoneme; and coalescent, where two phonemes merge to form a new sound when next to each other. Dissimilation is the opposite process, where a sound becomes less like an adjacent sound.
