Pre-requisite knowledge: Students should have a general understanding of what is a database.

Specific objective: On the completion of this lesson students should be able to:

Cognitive:

1. Accurately define terminologies associated with database (database and database

management system), after watching a YouTube video, without any assistance from the
teacher.
2. State the 4 functions of database management system, after the PowerPoint presentation
from memory.

Content:

Database -is a collection of related data about a particular subject (person, place or thing) stored

together.

Database management system (DBMS) - is the term for programs that handle the storage,

modification and retrieval of data, as well as controlling who has access to the information.

Manual database – A manual database is a hard-file storage system that consists of paper

records, folders and filing cabinets or storage room/boxes.

The functions of DBMS are:

1. Data storage, retrieval and updates. The DBMS must allow its users to store, retrieve and

update data.

2. Backup and recovery. The DBMS should allow you to recover the most recent contents

of the database in the event of system failure.

3. Security. The DBMS must handle password allocation and checking and allow access to

the data that a user is authorized to use.

4. Management facilities for sharing a database. The DBMS has to ensure that no user can

access the same record at the same time in order to modify it.

Engagement;

Students will be introduced to the topic database management by a skit performed by the teacher,

they will be asked to pay keen attention as they will be required to answer questions at the end.

(5 mins)

Focus question:

1. What are the two types of database identify?

2. What are some advantages of using a computerized database?

Exploration:

Students will now get the opportunity to explore a 11 minutes YouTube video entitle

“Introduction to Database Management Systems” where they will explore the definition,

functionalities, properties of database and also an example of how database works. (15 mins) The

teacher will then start a guided discussion by asking students.

Questions:

1. What is a database?

2. What is database management system?

3. What some functions of database?

Explanation

Based on the information students had explored on the definition, functionalities and properties

of database management system. The teacher will select students at random to explain their

understanding of DBMS. Students will be given a minutes to formulate their responses. The

teacher will aid in the explanation with a PowerPoint presentation to clear up any misconception.

(5mins)

Elaboration

Students will now get the opportunity to do a presentation on database management, where they

will use different scenarios to represent their understanding. (5mins)

Evaluation

Students will be given an activity to complete on database management system. The teacher will

monitor the class to ensure that task is completed.
