Factor of Safety for Driving Machines
and Sheaves. The factor of safety, based
on the ultimate strength of the material, to
be used in the design of driving machines
and in the design of sheaves used with
suspension and compensating ropes shall
be not less than:
1. 8 for steel, bronze, or for other
metals having an elongation of at
least 14% in a length of 51 mm.

d. Driving-Machine Brakes. The elevator
driving machine shall be equipped with a
friction brake applied by a spring, or by
gravity, and released electrically. The brake
shall be designed to have a capacity
sufficient to hold the car at rest with its rated
load [see a]so Sec. 6.D.8.8.1.

e. Screw i/lachines. Screw machines shall be
of the uncounterweighted type and shall
conform to the requirements of the section
and to the following:
1. The rated speed shall not exceed
0.25 m/s.
2. A car safety device conforming to
the requirements of Section 6.4.6
4. The factor of safety of the screw as
a column shall be not less than 3
based on the total weight supported
with rated load in the car.
5. Means shall be provided to maintain
the screw in its vertical position in
case of excessive over-travel.
6. Screws shall be of steel and nuts
shall be of bronze or other material
having an elongation of at least 14%
in a length of 51 mm.
7. A vertical casing, closed at the
bottom, shall be provided to enclose
and protect the screw below the nut.
Terminal Stopping Devices
r a. Additional Requirements for llYinding
Drum Machines. Final terminal stopping
devices for winding-drum machines shall
conform to the following:
1. Stopping switches, located on and
operated by the driving machine,
shall not be driven by chains, ropes,
or belts.
