Form group of four to five members and reflect on the following questions. Have you
experienced the same thing when you were misunderstood by others? Have you experienced the same
thing when people did not listen to you? How did the conversation go?

James W. Neuliep (2006) lists eight properties of communication. With your group members,
discuss what each property means. Write your consolidated insights on the second column. Then
consult credible authors and professionals about their views on each communication property. Write

LESSON 2:
LOCAL AND GLOBAL COMMUNICATION IN MULTICULTURAL SETTINGS
Goodman and Berdan (2014) argue that every student should study abroad for the reason that
"learning how to interact with people from other countries and cultures equips future leaders in all
sectors to address urgent issues shared across borders" (par.4).
Did you ever dream of taking your undergraduate or graduate studies abroad? Given the opportunity
and support, where would you want to study? What course would you want to take? Why?
Going abroad though is not as simple as you think. Crucial that you are prepared to interact with
different cultures.
Let us see how well you know some distinct manners and practices of different cultures. Write
TRUE if the statement expresses truth about the countries’ distinct practices; otherwise, write FALSE.
Most of these items are taken from "Multicultural manners: New rules of etiquette for a changing
society." of Dresser (1996).
On Body Language
_____1. When greeting, people from India hold their hands together in front of their chins in a prayer-
like position.
_____2. When greeting, most Latinos expect body contact. Hugging and kissing on the cheek are
acceptable for both the same sex and the opposite sex.

opposite sex, but men may embrace and kiss one another.

On Verbal Expressions

consider praise as a form of subtle criticism.

for your work (e.g., Best Advice to Move Abroad from Expat Students; The Inherent Risks of Study
Abroad; A Student's Guide to Choosing a Study Abroad Program)
