NURS 1170
GROUP PRESENTATION - DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AND CHANGE THEORY
VALUE: 15 % OF TOTAL MARK
Purpose:
1. To provide students with the opportunity to research a scholarly nursing article on the
determinants of health
2. To provide students with the opportunity to present key information from one article to the
class
3. To provide students with the opportunity to use the information from the scholarly nursing
article to create a client scenario and to demonstrate to the class how one would apply the
Stages of Change Model
4. To provide students with the opportunity to develop skills needed to function effectively in a
small group
Instructions:
Each group should have 6 – 8 members depending on class size. Each member is expected
to do an equal share of the work for this assignment. Each group will give a 10-minute presentation
on the determinants of health and behaviour change. PowerPoint MUST be used for this
presentation.
Each group will find one scholarly article on the determinants of health that is relevant for
nursing. The article might discuss one or more determinants. The group will present this article to
the class online. *** Please show the selected article to the professor to ensure that it is
appropriate before going ahead. Article in PDF format must be posted on BB in assignments
section before due date. If approved, you may proceed)
Please note that group members may not all receive the same mark based on the evaluation of
the professor and group members. If there is any group conflict(s), you must attempt to resolve the
issue(s) first before asking professor to intervene.
Each group will present the following information about the article selected for presentation by the
group:
Part A
o The purpose of the article
o The credentials of the author(s), the name of the scholarly nursing journal that published
the article, and the year the article was published
- During the presentation, this information should be on one slide, but need not be
read aloud, simply state, “Here is the information about the authors”.
o The key findings or key discussions
o A summary of recommendations by the authors (if any), or your team (if any).
o The nursing population(s) to whom the group would recommend the article
o An opinion about the ease of applying the knowledge gained from the article to the group
members’ own nursing practices
o A rationale for this opinion.
Part B (may begin part B after change model is reviewed in our online class)
o Use the determinants of health information in the article to create a realistic client
scenario (individual or family) that the group will use to demonstrate to the class how one
would apply Prochaska and DiClemente’s Stages of Change Model.
o Create any scenario as long as the focus is not on smoking cessation which is addressed
in class.
o Ensure that the audience is clear about what determinants of health the group is focusing
on.
o Include the following key points in the presentation:
Identify the stage of change of the client in the group’s scenario.
Choose one stage of change and provide a brief description of it
Identify three things that the group would do immediately with the client, based
on the stage of change chosen by the group.
Identify how the group would use what was learned in the article about the
barriers to change to help the client (tell the class how the group would use the
information).
Identify how the group would use what was learned in the article about the factors
that facilitate change to help the client (tell the class how the group would use the
information).
Identify three things the group would do in relation to on-going support for the
client.
Please NOTE: this section is not to present what are the Stages of Change, but to
select one stage within the model to apply it to the scenario your team created.
Part C
o Be prepared to respond to questions from the class and the professor.
**** Everything is due online (posted on BB in the assignments section) at the beginning of the
class on presentation date! Students first and last names must be on slide one.
