Action Verbs

An action verb is a verb


that describes an action,
like run, jump, kick, eat,
break, cry, smile, or think.

Examples:
-Cersei threw the ball across the yard.
-She accepted the job offer.
-The1cat sat by her window. 2

Linking Verbs

In traditional grammar and guide


books, a linking verb is a verb that
describes the subject by connecting
it to a predicate adjective or
predicate noun. Unlike the majority
of verbs, they do not describe any
direct action taken or controlled by
the subject.
Examples:
-I am a doctor.
-Her name is Maia.

Helping Verbs

-a helping verb is a verb


that comes before the main
verb (or lexical verb) in a
sentence. Together the
helping verb and the main
verb form a verb phrase.
Examples:
-We might give it a try.
