CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

Professional development refers to the continued training and education of an individual

in regards to his or her career. The goal of professional development is to keep us to up-
to-date on current trends as well as help us to develop new skills for the purpose of
advancement in the field.

Professional development is learning to earn or maintain professional credentials such as

academic degrees to formal course work, attending conferences and informal learning
opportunities situated in practice.

The aim of personal and professional development is to help us to manage our own
learning and growth throughout our career. Professional development can increase our
confidence and credibility, increase efficiency, development our ability to influence and
lead, enable networking, keep our knowledge and skills current, help us to achieve career
goals, enable us to become a better employee.

Professional development is something to be valued, cherished and actively pursued. It is

proven to enable career development and progression, allowing us to excel and shine
within our current role and as we progress

The Chartered Institute of Personal and Development (CIPD) describes professional

development in this way: “Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a combination
of approaches, ideas and techniques that will help you manage your own learning and
growth. The focus of CPD is firmly on results- the benefits that professional development
can bring us in real world. Perhaps that most important message is that one size doesn’t
fit all. Whenever we are in our career now and whatever we want to achieve, our CPD
should be exactly that: ours”.

CPD is not always formal and linear; activities can range from formal education activities
such as instructor- led training courses, workshops or seminars to more informal
approaches such as work-based learning or mentoring. CPD can also include self-directed
study such as e-learning courses and structured reading. It’s a record of what you
experience, learn and then apply.
