LIMITED" has been prepared for the partial fulfilment of the MBA program of Ace Institute of

Management under Pokhara University. This report provides detailed activities of my internship

and the work/duties I performed during the tenure of my nine weeks of internship from 20 th

October, 2022 to 19th December, 2022. The primary objective of this internship was to obtain

professional experience by increasing practical exposure to the corporate culture and

implementing the knowledge that has been learnt.

This intern report prepared under the guideline of Ace Institute of Management, Pokhara

University, and Mahalaxmi Bikas Bank Limited (the organisation where the intern was done)

gives the glimpse of HR Policies, rules and regulations, Bylaws of the organisation and the

process involved in the banking sector of Nepal. This report includes how the theoretical

knowledge studied in various courses at Ace Institute of Management is applied in the

internship.

To get the insights regarding the activities and responsibilities of the Human Resource

Department, I joined Mahalaxmi Bikas Bank Limited as an HR intern for the period of nine

weeks. During my internship period, I was assigned various tasks and responsibilities which I

completed successfully on a given time frame. I was assigned tasks such as updating employees

and prospects applicant’s database in excel, screening of CV, Recruitment and selection,

Employees’ Performance Appraisals etc.

Through this internship, I was able to learn more about managerial tasks, work ethics, time

vi
management, and professional communication in-depth. Throughout the internship, I've

discovered that having leadership qualities and the ability to work well with others is essential

for a successful team effort. I also realised that having a positive outlook is always necessary for

greater performance. I also had the chance to observe how people work in teams and exert effort

to achieve better results. I observed that I felt considerably more at ease approaching strangers to

learn about their work and request career guidance. Through the execution of many duties and

activities on administrative and human resource activities for the organisation, this internship has

expanded my knowledge base. Throughout the internship, I engaged in a variety of tasks, from

helping my supervisor and superiors with the organisation's daily operations to taking on some of

CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Report

An internship is a program that a company offers to prospective employees or students to

close the knowledge gap between theoretical and practical knowledge. It offers real-world

work experience in an environment where learning is integrated in the culture of the

organisation. Internships are frequently brief undertakings with the objectives of getting real-

world experience and applying classroom knowledge. For those who are interested in gaining

real-world job experience in a particular profession, an internship is a work-related learning

opportunity. The benefit of an internship for a student is that it enables them to make a direct

and useful connection between their academic learning and the workplace.

Pokhara University has created an internship as the foundation of its two-year MBA program.

An intern could test out all of the abilities they had learned from the offered curriculum

thanks to the internship program. The professional objectives of an intern is to increase their

degree of knowledge about banking institutions and the corporate sector and to build their

own decision-making abilities in a fast-paced work environment.

From October 20 to December 19, 2022, I was enrolled in an internship program at

Mahalaxmi Bikas Bank Limited (MBBL) in Thapathali, Kathmandu. The internship lasted

for a total of nine weeks. I chose to work in the HR department as my area of emphasis for

my MBA, which gave me the chance to learn about various HR organisational techniques and

the overall work environment. I've always wanted to work for a corporation, especially to see

how the HR division runs a business. Additionally, to advance in my future work in HR while

continuing to earn my master's degree in human resources, this internship program became

very fruitful.

CHAPTER II: JOB PROFILE AND ACTIVITIES PERFORMED
2.1 Activities Undertaken In Mahalaxmi Bikas Bank Limited
During the nine weeks of internship, I had an opportunity to work in the Human Resource

Department at Mahalaxmi Bikas Bank Limited. All the activities that are related to the human

resource department such as Recruitment and Selection, Learning and Development, Payroll

Management, Final Settlement, Staff Benefit and Facility, Filing the document of employees

etc. were exposed in the internship.

 Recruitment and Selection

Key Activities Performed

My role as an HR intern in Mahalaxmi Bikas Bank Limited in Recruitment and Selection was

to:

 Collecting the CV’s and screening it as per the required job specification for various

positions from merojob portal

 Scheduling the interview of selected candidates in both physical and online zoom

meetings

 After interviewing the candidates, they are selected on the basis of qualification,

experience and how they present themselves at the interview where my task was to

offer them a job by calling them by mentioning their salary and knowing their view

whether they are interested in it or not.

Problems Faced and Solved

The problems that were faced and solved during the work in recruitment and selection

process were:

 There were 200-300 candidates' CVs and documents per day to collect and screen

 Communication with almost 200 candidates per day for selection of interviews

36
 After the selection, preparation of the employee offer letter needed to be done

specifying the salary and allowances provided to the candidates.

 Performance Appraisals

Key Activities Performed

The key activities performed while preparing for promotion of employees in the organization

were:

 Collection of performance appraisals of each of the listed employees suitable for

promotions from Nimble HRIS.

 Scheduling of the interviews of promotion suitable employees in both physical setup

and Online (Zoom Meeting).

 Communicating with employees to call for interviews.

 After finishing the interviews, preparation of documents which includes performance

appraisals, attendance checking, leave taken, etc.

 Problems Faced and Solved

 The problems faced and solved while working in performance appraisals were:

 Collection of more than 200 appraisal sheets and rating sheets of employees per day

and sorting them accordingly.

 Communicating with different employees and listing out the employees ready for the

interviews.

 Writing memorandum for the selected employees for promotion.

2.1.3 Filing and Documentation of Other Administrative Activities

 Key Activities Performed

The key activities performed while completing administrative tasks are as follows:

 Documentation of employee records and filing them according to their employee

codes.

37
 Scanning and filing the required documents from training, loan repayments,

settlements, leave allocations, insurance facilities, medical allowances, etc.

 Listing and registering documents in reference books.

 Documentation in transfer files during transfer of employees

 Documentation of memorandum of training, job recruitments, etc.

Problems Faced and Solved

The problems faced and solved during the administrative works were:

 During the first weeks, it was confusing to handle the communication with employees

as well as customers because I did not have knowledge of the organisation system but

after getting involved with day to day activities I started to get familiar with the

organisation process.

 While handling calls, listening to employees and customers grievances were

problematic during first weeks because of new extension numbers but afterwards it

became easier to handle the task.

2.2 Key Observation and Analyses

One of the most efficient methods to learn something is through observation. We can learn a

lot through observation, including what works and what doesn't in the company. As an intern,

I have been observing the organisation's personnel, culture, methods of operation, and overall

management. Through this observation, I have drawn some significant conclusions and

gained experience working there. Here are a few of my main findings:

 Even though I was an intern, my voice was heard by all the team members when I had

suggestions to them on how to make the process better. That felt very good and

encouraged me to speak more and not keep things to myself.

38
 Organisational culture was very welcoming because the staff are truly cooperative,
helpful to each other, often entertaining and cheerful and are significantly committed
to the organisation.

 One of the observations I made was that sometimes, the coordination between
different departments were lacking and the departments failed to take responsibility
for their actions. This created misunderstandings among the departments.
 Some of the employees were working just for the sake of working rather than

developing a learning attitude.

 Leadership is democratic and employees do not hesitate to put any issues they want in
front of the management.

39
CHAPTER III: LESSONS LEARNT AND FEEDBACK
3.1 Key Skill and Attitudes Learnt

Working with the Mahalaxmi Bikas team gave me the chance to learn about the many HR

functions carried out in the business world. The nine week long internship was fruitful

because I was able to learn alot from the assigned department. The intern's skills and abilities

could be developed and improved through the internship process. To truly know anything,

theoretical understanding is insufficient. Practical experience is really important for this, and

programs like internships provide that opportunity. This internship experience has been quite

productive. One learns a variety of lessons and practical information throughout the

internship term that may be fundamental to one's career development.

The 9 weeks long internship program gave me a clear picture of how the corporate sectors

work in the real world; leading to the enhancement of Human Resource knowledge, skills and

abilities. Following are some of the skills which I learned during this internship:

1. Communication Skills

Communication is not just about speaking but listening as well. Informal communication

is simple, but when it comes to professional settings, formal language must be used.

Additionally, it's crucial to understand and be able to control our emotions. I had to talk

with my boss, the department head, and other employees during the nine-week work term,

which helped me improve my business communication abilities.

2. Time management

Everyone should be able to manage their time effectively. Attending class in the morning,

turning in assignments, and working an internship all at once was really challenging.

Even though I wasn't under any time pressure to complete the assignment, it taught me

40
the value of finishing on time. The value of time in one's life is taught during an

internship.

3. Networking Skill

Making connections with new people and establishing business relationships with

individuals both inside and outside of the organisation are key components of networking.

Throughout my internship, I interacted with a variety of staff members, learned about

their responsibilities, and developed my communication skills. I connected with other

potential employees on LinkedIn as well.

4. Work Ethics

Work ethics are an important factor in business. The system of moral ideals is known as

ethics. Numerous employees must interact with the HR department, and many of the

details are private. I was able to understand the seriousness of the secrecy of the

information that was available to me within the company through my personal ethics and

also with the help of my supervisor's supervision. I maintained my morals and work

ethics during my internship.

3.2 Feedback to the Organization

Although most part of my internship was pleasant there were some things that I felt could

have been better to ensure a much more learning environment for an intern. Some of them

are:

 A proper work schedule has to be divided for the interns, so that there could be a

proper task assigned to each intern.

 Employees should be viewed as an asset by the organisation and as a source of long-

term retention.

41
 Recreational activities should be arranged so that there is a more fun work

environment and employees can interact with people from other departments.

 Should give a bit more access to the human resource management software so that it

can be learnt more effectively.

 All the supervisors must clearly communicate to their employees while assigning the

task

 Employees must be hired from diverse area and various pool of resources which can

add value in the team

 Customer complaint and queries should be handled properly

 To make employees more productive and customer centric the employees need to be

motivated on a regular basis.

3.3 Feedback to the College/ University and Future Interns

Following are the feedbacks that I would suggest to the college/university:

 Supervisors should be assigned to each student so that they can have proper guidance

for solving any internship related issues.

 The internship should be planned in the sixth trimester so that the interns can put their

newfound expertise to use as soon as their master's degree is completed. They can

apply for employment opportunities that are available during internships.

 Rather than just providing theoretical knowledge, the organisation should focus on

providing practical exposure and guidance to their students.

 Another crucial consideration is the duration of the internship, 8 weeks of internship

is insufficient time to master a variety of skills. Some organisations are unwilling to

hire interns for a short amount of time or teach them anything because they will be

leaving soon. I propose that the University prolong the internship period to a

minimum of three months so that students can gain a variety of skills from the

42
professional world during that time.

 Ace Institute of Management could ask for former students and graduates with job

experience or internships to give their insights and advice on how to perform better.
