The Earth’s atmosphere is divided into several layers.


The closest layer to the ground is called the troposphere.
Here, the air may be polluted by gases and harmful
particles caused by burning fossil fuels. Electricity
generating plants using fossil fuels have high emissions
of gases such as (a) sulfur monoxide / sulfur dioxide (SO2),
(b) nitrogen monoxide / nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and, also,
(c) particular matter / particulate matter (PM). PM is a mixture of tiny airborne solid particles
or liquid droplets suspended in the air. Also, (d) volition organic compounds / volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) pollute the air since they are emitted as gases from solids or liquids like
paints, lacquers, pesticides, cleaning supplies and daily hygiene products. And, (e) carbon monoxide /
carbon dioxide (CO) is released into the air mostly by motor vehicles exhausts. The main component
of smog is (f) oxygen trioxide / ozone (O3) which is created when oxides of nitrogen mix in the air
with VOCs. O3 can create serious respiratory illnesses. However, O3 can also be found in the
(g) troposphere / stratosphere, but in this layer of the atmosphere, O3 is actually helpful as it protects
the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the (h) troposphere / sun.
