Contemporary Japanese
Characterized by “its simplicity, attention to
detail, contemplative atmosphere, and
palpable emphasis of material lightness
and gravity” (Brownell, 2016) that are
staples of Japanese design.
Philosophy
Japanese Wabi Sabi
“Wabi Sabi is a concept that originated in
Japan—it opposes many typical decoration
rules. The idea disregards absolute
symmetry, and the need for perfection in
everything" (Matute, 2020).

Hardscape palette

Wood
Preferably dark-colored woods
such as walnut, mahogany, or
maple. Staggered timbers may
be used as a design element.

Glass
Tempered glass, with tint for
added privacy.

Brick
Dragfaced bricks for building
finish, preferably in natural light
colors. Staggered bricks in grey
for walkways, open area, and
laundry area.

Cement
Polished cement for building
finishes, exposed aggregate for
car park and driveway.
