The Boy who loved ice cream is a story that displays concerning power imbalances between a

father and a son relationship that will negatively affect their child. The main issue of the story is
the imbalance of power his father has over his family. This is very prevalent in the story and
shows how Benji is treated worse out of all his siblings .Benji father suspects his wife of an affair
with another man in springville, while she spent three weeks away taking care of the needs of
her sick mother.

from going different places, where they can interact with many individuals. As the reader we can
suspect his family from interacting with other people, he fears they form their own opinions and
think for themselves and leave him.

paranoid and suspects Benji not being his own son.During the feastival the power imbalance is
very prevalent here.He shows sympathy for his son concerns of the getting he ice cream,He is
only focused on caughting his wife cheating on him or even seeing her simply interacting with
another man. Benji Father discards all of his feelings and is more worried about his own and
how can further control his family.

Irony is a technique that can be used in the story Boy who loves ice cream. The boy has a great
obsession just like his father. They both are obsessed over one thing and will do anything to get
it. The irony about this is a hint that the boy is in fact his biologically because of obsessive
behavior.

hair and complimenting her dark skin and praising it. As the reader we initially believe that
grandma Del is more caring and is better than Elaine.Because she is painted out as vain and
shallow by Grandmother Delr to her Grandchild. But we soon realize that Del is no better than
Elaine.Grandma Del believes in a lot prejudices as well, she al is also hypocrite and believes
you should not be too dark nor possess kinky hair. She also looks down on Ermandine and
Eulalie and views them as less than because they got pregnant at an early age.

Grandmother Elaine is drastically different from grandma del,she is a socailst that likes to take
care of looks and furthermore ridiculing her granddaughter black features.Grandma Elaine
discouraged her granddaughter from taking any pride in her black features but pureades her to
see them as flaws. She reprimands her daughter for having black features, Elaine strives to
dismiss grandma del teaching about her embracing herself. This resulting in her granddaughter
to becoming insecure of her black features.

At the end of the story the narrator prefers grandma Elanie over Del. She now believes in
Elaine ideology and sees del beliefs as irrelevant. As readers we are shown the granddaughter
preside both her grandmother prejudices. She no longer enjoys going to the countryside
because there are too many black people. She sees her friends Ermandine and Eulaie as
beneath her and tries to disassociate with them.
