Introduction
April 19, 1775 British
soldiers and American
colonists had their rifles
pointed at each other,
ready to fire the first shots
of the American
Revolution. This event
occurred in Lexington,
Massachusetts.
A series of events began
after the end of the French
and Indian War in 1763
that gradually led to open
warfare, which resulted in
independence for the
Americans. Beyond actual
events that caused the
American Revolution there
were other factors that
played a role.

The formation of colonial Sugar Act (1764)
legislatures gave the
Currency Act (1751 and
colonist a feeling of
1764)
independence from British
rule in that they were able Stamp Act (1765)
to pass their own laws and
muster troops. Quartering Act (1765)
Townshend Act (1767)
A cultural movement took
place in Europe in the late Boston Massacre (1770)
1600s and 1700s called the
Enlightenment. Writers Tea Act (1773)
involved in this movement Boston Tea Party (1773)
such as John Locke wrote
about such issues as Intolerable Acts (1774)
limited government and
consent of the governed.
This movement influenced
the thinking of many of the
founding fathers as they
began to seek liberty and
freedom from the control
of the British.
