Title: Calculate the average precipitation over catchment of irregular shape of five rain gauge
station occupying in this catchment.
Objectives:
Objectives of this project are to familiarize the students to draw the polygons of catchment and
calculate the area of catchment and run-off volume of the catchment.
Problem Details:
The catchment area of irregular shape will be assumed on graph paper and polygons will be
drawn. Then the area will be calculated with following scale.
One side of square box = 1000m + Roll Number of Group Leader
Precipitation Date:
Station A = 67cm + Roll Number
Station B = 56cm + Roll Number
Station C = 43cm + Roll Number
Station D = 47cm + Roll Number
Station E = 36cm + Roll Number
The following steps are used to determine average precipitation by Thiessen Polygon Method.
1. Draw the given area according to a certain scale and locate the stations where
measuring devices are installed.
2. Join all the stations to get a network of non-intersecting system of triangles.
3. Draw perpendicular bisectors of all the lines joining the stations and get a suitable
network of polygons, each enclosing one station. It is assumed that precipitation over
the area enclosed by the polygon is uniform.
4. Measure area of the each polygon.
