Instructions:
1. The project must be done individually by each student. No group submission is allowed.
2. No copying or plagiarism will be tolerated. Copying or plagiarising will earn a zero mark and will be
submitted to the formal channels of the University for appropriate disciplinary action.
3. PROJECT DUE DATE:
Upload to Moodle as a single pdf file by Tuesday 2 November 2021. No late submissions will be
accepted for marking. Late submissions will earn a zero mark. Projects may be uploaded to Moodle
earlier than the due date.

Format of the Project:

Your project must have the following format:

1. All the different parts/pages of your project must be combined into a SINGLE pdf file.
2. The cover page of your project must be the attached MARK SHEET (cover page).
3. This must be followed by a copy of this four page project brief.
4. Thereafter attach the remainder of your assignment in the following order:
 Layout Plan of the designed sewer reticulation network.
 Printed/handwritten calculations
State all assumptions. No calculations, no marks.
 Long section design/drawing
 The logical sequence and presentation of your calculations are of paramount importance.
PROJECT BRIEF

A sewer collector pipe has been drawn onto the attached township drawing.
Sketch a suitable layout of the sewer reticulation network for the entire township.
Design the pipe segment from MH D to MH E of the collector pipe in accordance with the CSIR
guidelines for human settlement planning & design. A scale bar has been drawn on the page to assist
you with measurements. All stands must be reticulated.

The design requirements are as follows:

 Income category: low income residential
 Maximum manhole spacing: 80m
 Pipe: uPVC sewer pipe
 Design lifespan: 50 years
 Outfall sewer connection point: point Z marked on drawing
 Peak factors to the based on CSIR guidelines for human settlement planning & design.
 The outfall sewer pipe from another middle income township flows into manhole C.

1. Sketch a suitable layout of the sewer reticulation network for the entire township. Number
the manholes/rodding eyes as MH1, MH2,…,etc. and RE1, RE2,….,etc. All stands must be
reticulated.
2. Calculate the design flow in the pipeline from MH D to MH E. Design the pipeline segment
from MH D to MH E of the collector pipe in accordance with the CSIR guidelines for human
settlement planning & design. The scale of the drawing can be read off from the scale bar
shown at the bottom of the drawing. . Show ALL calculations.
3. Design and draw the long section of the pipeline from MH D to MH E (one pipe). The long
section must contain the following information:
 Chainage
 Ground level
 Depth of ground cover to pipe
 Invert Level
 Pipe diameter & type of pipe
 Slope of pipeline
 Full bore velocity and actual velocity
 Full bore flow and actual flow
 Also specify the vertical and horizontal scale of the long section.
