1. (i) Find the limit

(iii) Let f (x) = x 3 . Show that there is no value c in the interval [−8, 8] such that

(iv) Let f (x) = x4 − 4x3 + 10.

(a) Find the intervals on which f is increasing or decreasing.

(b) Find the intervals on which f is concave up or concave down.

(c) Find the relative extrema and inflection points of f and sketch the graph of f .

2. (i) Find the vertex, focus, axis of symmetry and directrix of the parabola x−1 = (y+5)2
and sketch its graph.

(ii) Find the equation of the ellipse with foci (2, −1), (4, −1) and vertices (1, −1), (5, −1).

(iii) Sketch the conic 4x2 −y 2 −24x−4y+28 = 0 and find its foci, vertices and asymptotes.

3. (i) A water tank has the shape of an inverted right circular cone with its axis vertical,
vertex lowermost, base radius 3m and height 5m. If water is being pumped into the
tank at a rate of 2m3 /min, find the rate at which the water level is rising when the
water is 4m deep.

(ii) Consider the region bounded by the curve y = x, the x-axis and the lines x = 0
and x = 1.

(a) Find the area of the region.

(b) Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the above region about the
x-axis using disks.

(c) Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the above region about the
x-axis using cylindrical shells.

4. (i) Evaluate the following integral by first making a substitution and then using the
integration by parts.

5. (i) Find all polar coordinates of the point given by the Cartesian coordinates 1, 5 .

(iii) Sketch the region in the plane consisting of points whose polar coordinates satisfy
the following conditions.

(iv) Find the Cartesian equation of the curve given by the parametric equations x =

(v) Let a and b be fixed positive numbers with a > b. In the following diagram the line
segment AB is tangent to the larger circle. Find parametric equations of the curve
traced by the point P in the figure when the angle θ increases from 0 to 2π, with θ
as the parameter.

6. (i) Write down the following complex numbers in the form a + ib.
