Research Ethics

PENGERTIAN
• Research = Re + Search,
• Re = anew, over again
• Search = to test and to probe
• Research = a carefully, systematic study and investigation in some field of
knowledge
• Research is a scientific and systematic search for pertinent information on a
specific topic

• It is an art of scientific investigation

• It is a careful investigation through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge

• It is a voyage of discovery
TYPES of RESEARCH
At the most basic level, research can be split into two types:
1. Basic/Fundamental/Pure research
2. Applied research

Basic research is designed to help researchers better understand certain phenomena

Basic research attempts to broaden your understanding and expand scientific theories
and explanations.
Applied research is designed to identify solutions to specific problems or find
answers to particular questions

Technological : This research looks for ways to improve efficiency in

products, processes and production.
Scientific : This research measures certain variables to predict
behaviors, outcomes and impact.
Basic Research Applied Research
• Curiosity-driven vs Solution-driven

• Expand existing knowledge vs Find new knowledge

• Theoretical vs Practical nature

• Informational vs Commercial gain

• Universal scope vs Specific scope

• Research on how alcohol consumption impacts the brain
