Skeletal Muscles Part 2:

Anatomy of the Trunk and Shoulder Girdle
1. Skeletal Muscle System
Use Chapter 11 in your textbook to complete the muscle table. You are responsible for identifying,
naming, and knowing the origin(s), insertion(s) and major action(s) of the following muscles.

Muscles of the Abdominal Wall Muscles of the Pectoral Girdle

13. Rectus abdominis
Anterior
14. External oblique 20. Pectoralis minor

15. Internal oblique 21. Serratus anterior

16. Transverse abdominis Posterior

22. Trapezius
Muscles of the Thorax & Back
17. External intercostals 23. Levator scapulae

18. Internal intercostals 24. Rhomboidius major

19. Diaphragm 25. Rhomboidius minor

2. Cardiovascular System. Use chapter 20 to identify the following on the specimens and models. All of
these structures are paired. Include the word “right” or “left” when naming vessels and nerves.

Arteries
abdominal aorta, subclavian artery, axillary artery

Deep veins
inferior vena cava, subclavian vein, axillary vein

3. Nervous System. Use chapter 14 to identify the following peripheral nerves.

Intercostal nerves
The intercostal nerves supply the rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique and transverse abdominis.

Phrenic nerves
The phrenic nerves innervate the diaphragm which is the most important muscle of respiration.

Accessory nerve (cranial nerve XI)

The accessory nerve innervates the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles that move the head and neck.
