DYSLEXIA

Symptoms

 Problems with learning new words


 Inaccurate or slow word reading
 Difficulty in understanding the meaning and context of the reading
 Due to difficulty in understanding the meaning they have poor writing expression.
 They are not able to spell words properly. They often omit or substitute certain words for
example spelling ‘aepoplane’ instead of aeroplane.
 They face difficulty in writing expression and make a lot of grammatical mistakes while
writing.
 Poor understanding of numbers, letters and calculation
 They lack clarity in mathematical concepts for example addition and difficulty counting
backwards.
 The academic skills are quantifiably below the expected level for the individual according to
his/her age.
 Significant impairment is being observed in academic and occupational areas.

IN PRE SCHOOL CHILDREN

Symptoms like difficulty remembering or pronouncing long words, little understanding of rhyming
words are present. They call the things by wrong name for example when you ask a child to bring
you a glass of water; he/she may get a spoon. They do not understand simple instruction given for
any task. Moreover children with dyslexia feel difficulty picking up new words.

IN PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

Some of the symptoms that are present in primary school children include slow writing speed, poor
handwriting, confusion in putting the order of the letters, unusual pronunciation of words. They face
difficulty in remembering the sequence of alphabets, tables in mathematics. Often they forget days
of the week and months in a year. They have poor motor skills and are often confused between
simple concepts for example they mix up directions: east, west, north and south. As they face
difficulty in pronunciation so they avoid doing activities that involve reading.

IN TEENAGER AND ADULTS

Difficulty in writing reports, essay and documents due to issues in writing expression. Adults with
dyslexia cannot fix their working hours due to inability to complete reading and writing work.
Moreover they often make spelling mistakes. Most of them do not like public speaking and become
easily bored while reading. They often re-read sentences in order to comprehend it properly.

TYPES OF DYSLEXIA

PHONOLOGICAL DYSLEXIA

In phonological dyslexia a person faces difficulty with breaking words into small units and syllables.
As a result reading comprehension will be effected and that will further effect the oral and written
expression of the person.

VISUAL DYSLEXIA

Visual dyslexia involves trouble with processing the information what he eyes saw. People with
visual dyslexia often feel strain around the eye because the image seems blurred and incomplete.
They often skip words while reading.
