CHAPTER I
The Problem and its Background

Introduction

In early 2020, a global virus broke out which has been called as COVID 19, that lead as

pandemic, and trauma affected the progress of Education in various countries, and institutions,

that lead all the educators and students do a virtual class or what we called Online class. There

are several critical differences between online and traditional classes. These are the vital factors

students consider when they choose one or the other. Students are still required to attend class,

learn the material, submit assignments, and complete group projects. Despite these basic

similarities, there are many differences between the two modalities. Traditionally, classroom

instruction is known to be teacher-centered and requires passive learning by the student, while

online instruction is often student-centered and requires active learning involving with

technological advancement, learners now want quality programs they can access from anywhere

and at any time.

This study presents a comparative study between Traditional learning and Online Learning.

Which is traditional learning involving face to face classes and physical places where students

and the educators can interact personally whereas Online learning is virtual and it involves

technologies, gadgets and network connection where a server and browsers can make the

teachers and students interact with each other. This study is Looking for the comparison of

online and Face-to-face teaching on Grade 11 ABM Student of St. Clare College. Through these

comparisons, we are inquiring whether one teaching modality was significantly more effective

than the other. Although there were limitations to the study since we are in a middle of the

pandemic, this examination was conducted to provide us with additional measures and

information to determine if students performed better in online class over traditional learning.

Background of the Study

The purpose of this study is to Compare the study of Online learning and traditional learning

among Grade 11 ABM Students in St. Clare College, the study was conducted under three

research objectives these were: To identify the difference between online learning and traditional

learning, to assess the effectiveness of online learning and traditional learning, and to Identify

what is more effective learning techniques on students’ academic performance in Grade 11 ABM

Respondents. The research is intended to present an efficient understanding about the status of

the Respondents of our study on how they have a comparison basing on what Grade 11

Experiences.

Numerous comparative studies of traditional and online education have concluded That online

learning can be as successful and effective as traditional learning. Certain learning and

communication theories suggest that a third alternative blended learning, a combination of

distance and face-to-face learning has the potential to produce even better results than either

alone. The goal of this study was to examine how interactions vary across face-to-face and
7

entirely online classes, and how the quantity of these interactions might impact the effectiveness

of these courses in terms of students’ perceptions of the course success and Their satisfaction

with the overall learning experience.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What type of learning is the most effective way, between the Traditional Learning and Online

learning?

2. What are the challenges, students face in Traditional and Online learning?

3. How online learning and traditional learning affects the students?

4. Where do you learn more, In Online class or in Face-to-face Classes? How do you say so?

5. What are the advantages and disadvantage of online learning and traditional learning?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. To identify the difference between online learning and traditional learning.

2. To assess the effectiveness of online learning and traditional learning.

vision, awareness and give vast knowledge to the beneficials and to everyone. We will use

Quantitative Research, and have some Survey to gather data from them using a survey form or

google form. This study was also a way to share what knowledge we can gain about the

difference of the online learning and traditional learning. The study where the topic of online

learning vs. traditional learning is relatively new and therefore a lot of the research overlaps by

reciting the same studies.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

BLENDED LEARNING – The term blended learning is generally applied to the practice of

using both online and in-person learning experiences when teaching students. … Also called

hybrid learning and mixed-mode learning, blended-learning experiences may vary widely in

design and execution from school to school.

COVID 19 – Coronavirus disease or COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARSp-

CoV-2 virus also known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

COMPARATIVE – The definition of comparative is a comparison or an assessment of

similarities and differences between two or more things.

EFFECTIVENESS - is the capability of producing a desired result or the ability to produce

desired output. When something is deemed effective, it means it has an intended or expected

outcome, or produces a deep, vivid impression.

11

PANDEMIC – A pandemic is a disease outbreak that spreads across countries or continents. It

affects more people and takes more lives than an epidemic.

TECHNIQUE – A technique is implementation-that which actually takes place in a class room.

It is a particular trick, procedure to accomplish an immediate objective. It must be consistent

with the method and harmony with approach as well. A technique is a detailed list of rules or a

guideline for any (teaching) activity.

VIRTUAL CLASS - A virtual classroom is a video conferencing tool where instructors and

participants engage with each other and with the learning material. The difference with other

video conferencing tools is that virtual classrooms offer an added set of features that are essential

to a learning environment.

Reviews of Related Literature

INTRODUCTION

In the literature reviewed, a great number of studies have aimed at determining whether

Traditional learning, or face to face classes is better than Online Learning or the virtual class, for

instance, learning outcomes and students’ response and satisfaction to this study. Educators,

Researchers, and the higher educational are finding out which format or way of learning is better

12

LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

and effective learning for the students’ academic performance, However, as we see all see, A

comparative studies of Traditional learning and online learning shows one result, which might

answer the questions of this study, for the learning outcomes, satisfaction and students’

performance.

In this review of related literature, we present and get the definition of Traditional learning and

Online learning, and we also review the literature comparing Traditional and Online learning, on

this point, we explore which factors are better and effective in way of teaching in students’

performance, The review serves to show that the Traditional learning is in favor for the people’s

opinion.

LOCAL

As the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic continues to spread all over the world, The

Philippines is among those that went to unprecedented levels of crisis mode and faced difficulties

in getting the virus under control.

The Covid 19 pandemic greatly affected the education sector in the Philippines. From Traditional

or face to face learning, schools shifted to Online learning or the Visual learning,

where learners and educators need to face numerous difficulties such as, problems in internet

connectivity, resources, and distractions. This is a Major problem because According to the

researchers, Philippines ranked 77 among the countries with the slowest and least stable internet

connection in the world and according to Ryan Michael Flores Oducado, Homelo V. Estoque

(April 2021) the undergraduate nursing students considered having online learning during the
13

LEARNING

COVID 19 outbreak to be stressful (44.4%) and very stressful (47.2%). Moreover, the

undergraduate nursing students had low satisfaction (37%) and moderate satisfaction (46.3%)

having the online learning during the COVID-19 outbreak. The undergraduate nursing students’

academic performance were affected by the COVID19 pandemic and resulted in poor (37%) to

fair (50%) academic performance and were considerably (43.6%) and greatly (30.6%) affected

by the pandemic.

Traditional learning, Face to face classes is more better and effective learning because Students

can gather together and share ideas about the topic, this would help them have a lot of knowledge

about the relevant topic and understand the discussion, Students can also discuss their learning

which will help others and the educators more about their student, this can also build them a

teamwork or a group work that will make them think critically Teachers can also easily evaluate

and know their student's weaknesses and strengths because they can interact well with the

students, which is their primary duty as a teacher. The student's clarification and queries can be

easily entertained since the teacher and student’s interaction is there. The student's clarification

and queries will greatly help the teacher to assess if the student learns from the discussion.

As for Online classes, students and educators must have their gadgets or technologies to learn,

like laptops, internets or a phone, that might affect the students and teachers because based on

our research there are numerous students and educators who drop out or stop teaching and

attending of school because of lack in money and specially technologies they need to attend a

class. Online classes tend to have less interaction with students and teachers due to the distance.

And base on our research there are some teachers who just gave inputs and outputs of the study
14
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

and you need to learn it by yourself through self-study. The teacher has difficulty assessing their

students whether they learned from the discussion or not. The platform that we were using could

be accessed through emails, group chats, video conferencing software/app, etc. It may be another

burden from the students and teachers.

Many Studies have struggled about the crisis or the COVID 19 pandemic specially in education,

according to (Rappler, Sunday, July 18.) “Every morning, Adelaide Dolar would ask a favor:

could she charge her mobile phone at her neighbor's house? She didn't have electricity at home,

and her children needed her gadget for online class work. She did this for the whole duration of

the school year 2020-2021.”

The pandemic made it difficult for financially struggling families like hers to fulfill their

children's needs for distance learning Aside from the financial burden brought by remote

education, Dolar said that her children's mental health had been affected. Without teachers

explaining the lessons to students, she had to change her morning routine so she could guide and

motivate her children to answer their learning modules. That delayed her preparation of food she

would sell in the afternoon. (Dolar 2021)

In a recent video interview released by the Ateneo School of Government, Professor Carmel

Abao said that aside from the issue of accessibility, remote learning also had an impact on

students' mental health.

"There's an issue on the impact of this kind of learning on mental health. I still think that this is

not advisable. Our kids are not made for this kind of isolation. Even if you do perform well in

15
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

online learning, it's different if you're able to see, feel, and talk with your classmates," she said.

(Rappler 2021)

Many people are in favor of the comeback of the Traditional learning because of numerous

difficulties, students and families faced during pandemic.

FOREIGN

There is uncertainty about the length of the pandemic and chances of reinfections, the social

distancing can become a new normal. So, all the educational institutes need to be prepared to

shift majority of the course content to e-learning platforms and modify the course structure and

curriculum suitably. The results of our study can be important input in deciding on the learning

environment in online platform to promote effective learning. In the next section, we provide a

brief review of literature followed by data and methods section where we describe the

methodology used in the study. Then, we discuss the results and the implications followed by

concluding remarks of the study.

Many countries have ordered closure of all educational, have come to a functional institution

have come to a functional standstill since they had to protect their students from viral exposures,

However, by mind March, nearby 75 Countries have implemented or announced closure of

educational institutions. As on 10th march, school and University closure. globally due to the

covid – 19 has left one in five students out of school.

16
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

Covid – 19 has been a trigger for educational for educational institutions worldwide to pursue

creative approaches in a relatively start notice. During this time most of the universities have

shifted to online mode using Blackboard, Microsoft Teams Zoom, or other online platforms,

Important to note that the learning quality depends on the level of digital access and efficiency.

The online learning environment varies profoundly from the traditional classroom situation when

it comes to learner’s motivation; satisfaction and interactions.

That there was no significant difference between online learning and face to face class with

regard to their satisfaction and also, they supported that fact that online class will be as effective

as traditional class if it is designed appropriately.

Educational institutions in India have also made a transition to online teaching environment soon

after Union Government’s decision to impose nation-wide lock-down for 21 days from 25th

March, 2020 which was later extended for 19 more days. However, the major concern is about

the quality of learning which is closely related with how well the content is designed and

executed. Effectiveness of learning also depends on how the content is curated to online

environment and also in understanding and addressing the constraints faced by students. The

study is even more relevant considering that in India the system of online education has never

been tried at this scale and this is like a massive social experiment.

Further, in agriculture education sector, the curriculum of agriculture gives a lot of importance to

practical aspects and adopting it to online platform can decide the effectiveness. In this line, we

have examined Indian agricultural students’ perception regarding online education and various
17
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING

attributes which could make the online learning more effective and successful. The results of the

study are important for educational institutes in Agriculture for two main reasons. Firstly, the

shift to online mode has been an abrupt one due to unprecedented lockdown imposed to manage

the COVID-19, and the institutes did not had time to design and adopt the course contents for

online mode. In this context, experience of students and the learnings can be incorporated to

make online learning easy, efficient and productive. Second, even after lockdown is revoked, life

after the COVID-19 pandemic will not be like before and online learning is here to stay, though

in combination with regular offline classes.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the research methodology for this qualitative

grounded study regarding to online learning and traditional learning. This approach allowed for a

deeper understanding on what kind of learning will be more effective for the students.

18
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

The applicability of grounded theory and constructivist approach for this study are discuss in

depth in this chapter. The research plan, including the methodology, study participants,

procedures, and analysis method, are primary components of the study.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Qualitative research provides a more realistic feel of the world that cannot be experienced in the

numerical data and statistical analysis used in quantitative research. It provides flexible ways of

collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data and information. As outlined by Boodhoo and

Purmessur (2009). Because the purpose of this study is to find out what kind of learning will be

more effective for the students.

Grounded Theory Methodology

Grounded theory offers educational researchers a method that complements varied forms of

qualitative data collection and that will expedite their work. Adopting more grounded theory

strategies will enable educational researchers to further the theoretical reach of their studies and

to make tacit meanings and processes explicit. Constructivists have not only re-envisioned

grounded theory, but also revised it in ways that make the method more flexible and widely

adoptable than its earlier versions. Charmaz and Bryant (2010). Grounded theory emphasizes

focusing data collection and checking and developing analytic ideas. Hence, grounded theory

offers the tools for building strong evidence within the analysis and for explicating processes.

Consequently, grounded theorists in education have a bright future for making powerful

arguments in areas such as curricular studies, educational leadership, and educational policy.

19
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

Charmaz and Bryant (2010). It is iterative and evolving, aiming to construct new theory from

collected data that accounts for those data. It is also known as the “grounded theory method”,

although the terms have become interchangeable (Bryant & Charmaz, 2007).

The aim of all research is to advance, refine and expand a body of knowledge, establish

facts and/or reach new conclusions using systematic inquiry and disciplined methods. The

research design is the plan or strategy researchers use to answer the research question, which is

underpinned by philosophy, methodology and methods. Birks defines philosophy as ‘a view of

the world encompassing the questions and mechanisms for finding answers that inform that

view’ (p. 18). Researchers reflect their philosophical beliefs and interpretations of the world

prior to commencing research. Ylona, Melanie, and Karen (2019). Methodology is the research

design that shapes the selection of, and use of, particular data generation and analysis methods to

answer the research question. While a distinction between positivist research and interpretivist

research occurs at the paradigm level, each methodology has explicit criteria for the collection,

analysis and interpretation of data. Grounded theory (GT) is a structured, yet flexible

methodology. This methodology is appropriate when little is known about a phenomenon; the

aim being to produce or construct an explanatory theory that uncovers a process inherent to the

substantive area of inquiry. One of the defining characteristics of GT is that it aims to generate

theory that is grounded in the data. The following section provides an overview of GT – the

history, main genres and essential methods and processes employed in the conduct of a GT

study. Grounded theory is a strong, inductive research method for discovering new theories. You

don’t go in with any preconceived hypothesis about the outcome, and are not concerned with

20
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

validation or description. Instead, you allow the data you collect to guide your analysis and

theory creation, leading to novel discoveries.

The Researcher

Researcher are the one that gather data. They gather data from the respondents and from the

articles that related to their topic. Researcher role is to attempt to access the thoughts and

feelings of study participants. As the researcher collect data, they make an solution to the

problem about the topic. They give recommendation about the actions that can help to solve the

problem in the topic.

DATA GATHERING

This study used an interviewing method, found in Appendix D, where both the interviewer and

the interview questions were the instrumentation used. Memos were used to capture any research

thoughts during and after each interview. The interviews were recorded electronically using a

Dell Laptop. The interviews began with open-ended questions about the participants’ initial

interest in traditional learning and online learning. More intensive questions followed, with the

intent to gather data with more depth on motivation (Charmaz,2006). The interview concluded

with more open-ended questions, framed to invite more depth regarding on what type of learning

is the most effective way between online learning and traditional learning

RESPONDENTS

21

The Respondents will be gathered from three (2) Senior high school section taking up the same

strands (Accountancy Business Management) at St. Clare College of Caloocan.

As the study will pursue an interview schedule type of survey, the researchers will use random

sampling. The random sampling process will be performed through making a survey via google

form that will randomly choose five (5) respondents from the list of those student who answer

the form. For instance, the Researchers, also ask what type of learning are there in favor with so

that the questionnaire will be more valid and efficient to ask. Furthermore, as the group of

researchers consist of 10 members, each pair member of the group will interview 1-2

respondents. By this the Researcher will ensure that the chosen five (5) respondents will actively

answer all 10-questionnaire including the statement of the problem in the interview.

DATA PROCEDURE

Selecting a topic can be the most difficult part of a research assignment. Since you’ll think what

will be the main point of the study. The Researchers select a topic that is within the parameters

set by the assignment. We followed the guidelines given by our instructor rather Teacher in

Practical Research. The Researchers chose a Topic that they found interesting and Unique or a

current problem.

Before we begin our research, The researchers did a preliminary search to determine whether

there is enough information out there for our needs and to set the context of our study. We Look

up for some sources that is measurable or manageable amount of information. Now that we have

our topic and title, we look up for the keywords of it, and locate some sources, literature like

books, magazines, article and so on. We Evaluate all the sources we’ve got to check if it’s all

reliable and appropriate and efficient to our study, and to determine if those resources will meet

our needs. We Consult the resources we’ve have chosen and note the important information that

will be useful in our paper. We also made sure that all of the sources we consult are saved, for

the bibliography that we’ll be creating later. We Begin by organizing the information we have

collected. So that it will be easier for us to get the ideas, and determine which sources will be

more needed. After this we revise and edit some grammars, typos to create a final paper to turn

in. The Final step is we proof read all of our paper to make sure that it is perfect to turn in, we’ve

read through the text check if it has a wrong spelling, grammar, words, phrases punctuation and

23
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

errors, we’ve also made sure that our sources are cited according to the rules of our instructor.

And lastly, we’ve made sure that our study will be understandable, and stated properly.

DATA ANALYSIS

Coding of transcripts was completed in the order of the interviews conducted, in batches of 3 at a

time, allowing the researcher to reflect and edit the interview questions as theories began to

emerge from the data. Coding of transcript is one of the data analysis methods that you can use if

you are conducting qualitative research. Coding is the most important stage in the qualitative

data analysis process. Qualitative data coding is the process of creating and assigning codes to

categories data extracts. You’ll then use these codes later down the road to derive themes and

patterns for your qualitative analysis (for example, thematic analysis). Coding and analysis can

take place simultaneously, but it’s important to note that coding does not necessarily involve

identifying themes (depending on which textbook you’re reading, of course). Instead, it generally

refers to the process of labelling and grouping similar types of data to make generating themes

and analyzing the data more manageable. Jenna (PhD Cand) & Derek (MBA) | December 2020

Coding is the core process in classic grounded theory methodology. It is through coding that the

conceptual abstraction of data and its reintegration as theory takes place. There are two types of

coding in a classic grounded theory study: substantive coding, which includes both open and

selective coding procedures, and theoretical coding. In substantive coding, the researcher works

with the data directly, fracturing and analyzing it, initially through open coding for the

emergence of a core category and related concepts and then subsequently through theoretical

24
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

sampling and selective coding of data to theoretically saturate the core and related concepts.

Theoretical saturation is achieved through constant comparison of incidents (indicators) in the

data to elicit the properties and dimensions of each category (code). There are a number of

coding challenges that may confront those undertaking a grounded theory study. Among the

most common challenges are those of preconceiving the study through the import of some

standard qualitative research requirements, raising the focus of coding and analysis from the

descriptive to the conceptual level and trusting one’s intuitive sense of the conceptualization

process to allow a core category to emerge, then being comfortable to delimit data collection and

coding to just the core concept and those concepts that relate to the core. (Judith A. Holton,2007)

Trustworthiness

Is it impossible to “trust” an institution? What exactly do people mean when they claim to

“distrust” their government? As difficult as it may be to define, trust is essential to the formation

and maintenance of a civil society. In trust and Trustworthiness political scientist (Russel

Hardin) addresses the standard theories of trust and articulates his own new and compelling idea;

According to him, Research into the roles of trust in our society has offered a broad range of

often conflicting theories. Some theorists maintain that trust is social virtue that cannot be

reduced to strategic self-interest; others claim that trusting another person is ultimately a rational

calculation based on information about that person and his incentives and motivation. (Russel

Sage Foundation, 2002) Trust from other people is an important virtue that is hard to be earned.

Trusting either an individual or an institution is not too easy. Credibility is one important thing

that must considered. Being trustworthy is a very good foundation that an individual or
25
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONLINE LEARNING AND TRADITIONAL
LEARNING
AMONG GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN ST. CLARE COLLEGE

institution can obtain. Because without any hesitation people believe that they can do something

what they expect or either beyond their expectation. Consistency and reliability are two ways to

gain the confidence and trust of others. Being trustworthy has a positive impact and improves the

workplace culture. It makes an impact on the environment.
