CYLINDERS AND VALVES
Pneumatic Cylinder
Pneumatic cylinders (sometimes known as air cylinders) are mechanical devices which produce force, often in
combination with movement, and are powered by compressed gas (typically air).
A valve is a device that regulates the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing
various passageways. Valves are technically pipe fittings, but are usually discussed as a separate category. In an
open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure.
Valves are quite diverse and may be classified into a number of basic types. Valves may also be classified by how
they are actuated:
Hydraulic
Pneumatic
Manual
Solenoid

• Choke valve, a valve that raises or lowers a solid cylinder which is placed around or inside another cylinder
which has holes or slots.
• Check valve or non-return valve, allows the fluid to pass in one direction only.
• Gate valve, also known as a sluice valve, is a valve that opens by lifting a round or rectangular gate/wedge out of
the path of the fluid
