TECHNOLOGY

IN SCHOOLS
Module 5: Leaders as Connected Learners
Kathy Villarroel-Sponagle

Technology is part of our everyday

life, from smartphones to online
ordering and online learning, and
it is integral for students to
understand the basics of using
technology as a tool for enhancing
their production, education, and
skills.
The unique benefits and features of

technological tools is having the

ability to learn a new skill by simply
turning on the computer and
searching online. Students can watch
a video on YouTube to help them
understand material from
Mathematics to Coding and
everything in between.

Educating students on locating online

tools that will help them in different
subjects will provide them the
opportunity to learn from home,
especially when students aren't able to
receive the help at home.

Using technology within the classroom

allows the educator the ability to
differentiate instruction to meet the
needs of all students in the classroom.
Tools such as voice to text provides
learners the ability to describe their
understanding without the need of writing
it down which can impede some students
thinking.

Learners who in the past had

difficulty reading and were labelled
‘illiterate’, now have online tools
that will read information for them
providing support to succeed out in
society and in turn increasing their
self-esteem.

One of the digital tools that I

would leverage for is Extended
reality (XR) which includes virtual
reality (VR), augmented reality
(AR), and mixed reality (MR).
Extended reality grants students
the opportunity of exploring core
competencies such as their
creativity, social emotional
learning, and citizenship.

As well as being immersed and engaged in

new learning opportunities such as
virtual trips to other parts of the world
during Geography class. In Science,
students will be able to participate in
experiments that they may not have
access due to cost or availability to
equipment.

"THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN TODAY’S CLASSROOMS HAS THE

POTENTIAL TO ENABLE, EXPAND, AND ACCELERATE LEARNING IN
WAYS PREVIOUSLY UNIMAGINABLE (FULLAN & LANGWORTHY,
2014). WHETHER THROUGH INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS,
TABLET APPS, ROBOTIC TOYS, OR GAMIFIED QUIZZES,
TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING THE WAY SCHOOLS WORK." (PEOPLE
FOR EDUCATION, 2022)
