 Read the example letter and complete the gaps in the letter with six correct words or phrases.

ACTIVITIES
 Read the information on Ordering Ideas to pupils and answer any questions they might have.
 Write Iris went to the theatre ... on the board and ask pupils to come up with as many ways as possible to complete
the sentence so it says what happened when she went to the theatre ( e.g., Iris went to the theatre while her husband
parked the car.). Encourage them to use the words for ordering ideas from the Learning Focus (e.g., Then Iris drove to

the shops to buy some bread. After that, they went to the cinema to see a film. Before going home, they visited a pizza
restaurant. Finally, they arrived home at midnight. etc.).
 Ask pupils to look at the picture in the top right-hand corner of page 130 and ask them what they can see. Then ask
them to work in pairs to discuss why people would go to the place in the picture.

 Ask pupils to look at the words in the yellow word bank and elicit that they are all words used to order ideas.
Encourage pupils to look back at the information at the top of the previous page to help them with the task if they
need to.
 Remind pupils to pay attention to the words immediately before and after the gaps. They should read the letter again
once they have finished to check their answers.
 Ask pupils to do the task individually but check answers as a class. (Student’s Book p.131 – Activity D)

 Remind pupils that they should always make a plan for their writing before they begin.
 Ask them to skim read the letter again and to write the main idea of each paragraph next to it. Then ask them to

compare their notes to the descriptions in E before writing the paragraph numbers.

 Ask pupils to read the Exam Close-up box about choosing the right question to w rite about.
 Remind pupils they should choose the one they can answer the best rather than the one that might look the easiest.
 Tell them they need to think about the vocabulary they need to use, as well as how they use narrative tenses if writing
a story.
 Now ask pupils to read the two questions in the Exam Task. Ask pupils to tell you which one they would choose to
write and why. Encourage everyone to express their choice with their reasons why

 Ask pupils to review their learning by telling a story about their learning in this lesson.
POST-LESSON  Pupils need to re-use the phrases for ordering ideas that they learnt in this lesson and the previous lesson.
 Allow pupils to practise telling their story to a talk partner before selecting pupils to tell their story to the class.
