Pasivo
The passive forms are made with be (or get) and the past participle.

Unit 6: Art 3
An active sentence and the corresponding passive sentence have the same meaning, but they are
not normally interchangeable.

One main use of the passive forms is when we want to express what happened without
mentioning the people or things responsible for the action. This happens when we don't know the
people, etc., responsible, e.g.:

My computer is being repaired These houses were built in the

XVII

Another main use is when we want to appear objective, for example in describing scientific
experiments or giving medical advice, e.g.:

100 grams of salt were dissolved in 1 litre The pills should be taken before meals.

of water. Las píldoras deberían tomarse antes de las
Se disolvieron 100 gramos de sal en 1 litro comidas.
de agua

Another main use is when the people or things responsible constitute new information. Compare

the following situations:

1. First situation: 1. Second situation:

"I will introduce you to Sally Winters. A: "I like that portrait of you.”

information about it by saying: "It was
painted by Sally Winters".

Similarly, if someone asks "What happened to Mrs Lawrence?" it would be more natural to reply
"She was attacked by a dog" than "A dog attacked her".

Notice that, in a passive sentence, when we mention the people or things responsible, the

preposition is by (not for), e.g.:

Mrs Lawrence was attacked by a dog.

A la señora Lawrence la atacó un perro.

Hamlet was written by Shakespeare.

Hamlet lo escribió Shakespeare

You will be met by a representative of the company.

Le recibirá un representante de la empresa

You will sometimes see passives with get instead of be, with very similar meaning, e.g.:

Tim was/got caught trying to steal a radio.

Cogieron a Tim cuando intentaba robar una radio

As distinct from Spanish, an indirect object can become the subject of a passive sentence, e.g.:

Wendy was given a bicycle for her If you are offered cocaine, don't accept it
birthday. Si te ofrecen cocaína, no la aceptes.
A Wendy le dieron una bicicleta por su
aniversario

Unit 6: Art 5
Should more funding be spent to technology education or arts education?

In the technological era in which we live, many people think it is useless to spend resources on
educating children in the arts and believe that it is better to spend time and funding on teaching
children programming.

It is no secret that technology will revolutionize all areas of life, especially the job market. This is the
line taken by the Bank of America Merrill Lynch report, which predicts that 43% of jobs will be
automated in the next 20 years. But in contrast, 900,000 new jobs that do not yet exist will also be
created. It is for this reason that if, from an early age, programming or robotics are introduced
through games, it is certain that today's children will be better able to face tomorrow's work.

In other matters, UNESCO has pointed out that the mastery of the arts is fundamental for the
development of people, since it encourages alternative thinking and the search for creative
solutions. But most importantly, art fosters individual skills. An example is theater, which helps to
lose embarrassment when speaking in public and improves social relations. Art also fosters
tolerance and sensitivity, helping to appreciate diversity and creating intercultural dialogue.
Fundamental abilities to live in a prosperous society.

In summary, it cannot be denied that both disciplines are important. That is why I believe that the
best option is the fusion of both. By combining technology and art, we will prepare the next
generations for the future they will live in, meeting the technological needs of the moment and using
culture to avoid destroying the past and giving meaning to society.
