SOP description: TWO COAL MILL OPERATION
Department: Power Revision Date:
Version No: 03 SOP No: VL/2201/OPER/WI- 121 Revision No: 01
Plant 03.02.2021

1. PURPOSE: Operation of boiler with two coal mills at partial load operation of Boiler with no oil
gun support.
2. SCOPE: All three units
3. RESPONSIBILITY: Desk Engineers
4. DURATION: NA

5. OUTPUT: Proper operation of boiler with two coal mills helps in reduction in ESP inlet
temperature, maximized milling efficiency with minimum auxiliary power consumption at partial
load.

6.1 INITIAL STATUS

6.1.1 One boiler is running with partial load of 145-190 TPH.

6.1.2 Blending Coal GCV should be greater than 3000 Kcal/Kg.
6.1.3 All the bunkers are fed with imported and Indian blended coal in the ratio 20:80%.

6.2 OPERATION SEQUENCES:

6.2.1 During part load operation of boiler with blended coal in two or more bunkers keep the AA-
elevation SADC open more than 40% always irrespective of the adjacent(A-mill is in service or
not.)
6.2.2 Normal FD air flow must remain about 20000m3/hr. more when only imported/blended coal is
fed. ie. Keep FD flow 1,80000m3/hr. per fan if operating with blended coal for the same load
with Indian coal FD flow is requiring only 1,60000m3/hr. per fan.
6.2.3 Maximize the corner pressure, for Indian coal it is advised to maintain at about 0.20-0.30 Kpa
but during imported/blended coal operation increase the corner pressure up to 0.50-0.60Kpa
to prevent the approach of flame intensity nearer to the furnace wall which will prevent the
buildup of temperature nearer to ash fusion temperature.
6.2.4 With AA- elevation open more than 70% increase other elevation damper equally for proper
distribution of secondary air.
6.2.5 Preferably go for A/B and if required go for A/C or B/C mill operation.
6.2.6 Maintain furnace oxygen at about 2.8-3.5% for Indian coal. Maintain furnace oxygen at about
3.8-4.5% for blended coal operation
6.2.7 Maintain the PA fan outlet pressure as per mill loading with remaining vigilant about the mill
inlet temperature not going above 180 DegC.
6.2.8 Follow the schedule of soot-blower operation (Furnace soot-blower/Fixed rotary and Long
Retractable once daily as per requirement.
6.2.9 Desk operator should always communicate with the coal handling person regarding coal
quality during two mill operation.
6.2.10 Desk operator must always communicate with the Ash handling operating personnel
regarding Bottom ash generation its quality and evacuation status.
6.2.11 It is strongly recommended to operate the other standby mills for 10hrs in every two days
especially in summer season to prevent fire in the Bunker.
6.2.12 Strict adherence of schedule mill changeover to be followed during blending coal operation as
per (6.2.11).
6.2.13 Water sprinkling to be done in shutdown unit bunkers if smoke comes out with proper
communication with main control room.

6.2.14 It is strongly recommended that take oil gun support if Boiler load goes below 145 TPH.
6.2.15 Three consecutive Mills Operation when moisture of coal above 10 %
6.2.16 Oil gun Support when two Mills in operation or consecutive mills are not in service when
moisture of coal above 10 %
