1.  OBJECTIVE:
1.1 Boilers are used to produce steam which is used for sterilization of injectables and also for the
preparation of WFI. Hence the objective of this SOP is to describe a procedure for effective
operation of Boiler.

2. SCOPE

2.1 This SOP is applicable to the precaution to be taken during Operation of Boiler at Vital
Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. Nashik.

3. RESPONSIBILITY
3.1 Maintenance Supervisor: To follow the procedure correctly as per SOP.
3.2 Maintenance Incharge: To ensure that the procedure is followed correctly as per SOP.
3.3 QA Manager: To ensure that the procedure followed is correct and to review and
authorize the documents.

4. PROCEDURE:
PRINCIPLE: BOILER STEAM GENERATOR works on principle of THERMAL ENERGY
GENERATION, water boils and evaporates at 100˚C under atmospheric
pressure. Under higher pressure water evaporates at higher temperature. During
the evaporation process, pressure and temperature are kept constant and a
substantial amount of THERMAL ENERGY is generated to convert water from
liquid to vapor phase. After total evaporation steam is called as DRY
SATURATED. In this conditions steam contains a large amount of LATENT
HEAT, hence called superheated steam.
FREQUENCY: N.A.
4.1 BOILER ROUTINE CHECK-UP :
4.1.1 Every day before starting the boiler it is essential to check the Softness (PPM) of the
feed water. It must be below 5 PPM.
4.1.2 Also check the oil level and water level in the delivery tanks before starting the boiler

4.2 PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN AND PROCEDURE WHILE FIRING THE

BOILER
4.2.1 Keep the “Main Steam Out-Let” valve closed.
Keep the “Blow Down Valve” closed.
Open the “Bypass Valve”.
Open the water “Inlet Valve” of the water pump.
Open the oil “Inlet Valve” of the oil Filter.
Put the Main Switch ON.
4.2.2 Put switch of the panel in position 1 to start only the water pump.
Let the coil be filled up with water, and observe it coming out from bypass line.
Put off the water pump by keeping switch in ‘0’ position when water comes out from
the bypass line.
4.2.3 Press the push button and put switch in position 2 for firing, until the pressure goes
up to set pressure and low-pressure indicator lamp goes off. As soon as flame
develops ignition will stop. It will be indicated by glowing the indicator lamp
momentarily.
4.2.4 Close the Bypass Valve and open the main steam outlet valve slowly to take the
steam to the plant.

4.3 PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN AND PROCEDURE WHILE GIVING BLOW

DOWN
4.3.1 If no more steam is required, then close the “MAIN STEAM OUTLET VALVE”
as soon as the boiler will cut off at High Pressure.
4.3.2 Put the switch of the panel in position “O”.
4.3.3 Open the “BLOW DOWN” valve fully. Note down the time for a pressure drop
from 6 kg/cm2 to 1 kg/cm2 which is known as BLOW DOWN TIME and it must
lie within 25 seconds.
4.3.4 When pressure becomes almost ZERO close the “BLOW DOWN” valve and
open the “BYPASS VALVE”.
4.3.5 Put on the Switch in position ‘1’ to run the water pump only.
Let the water circulated through coil till the temperature of water outlet reaches
60C and then switch off the water pump by putting the switch in position “O”.
4.3.6 Put off the Main supply.
