1.  OBJECTIVE:
1.1 The quality of Potable water is critical for the manufacturing of purified water which in turn affects
the quality of distilled water and WFI which are very critical for the manufacturing of injectables.
Hence the objective of this SOP is to describe a proper cleaning procedure of underground potable
water storage tank available at Vital Healthcare Pvt. Ltd.

2. SCOPE

2.1 This SOP applies to the cleaning of 3,00,000 litres S.S. underground potable water storage
tank in utility section at Vital Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. Which is located at ground floor near the
topical ointment section.

3. RESPONSIBILITY
3.1 Maintenance supervisors: To follow the procedure of cleaning as per SOP.
3.2 Maintenance In-charge: To ensure that procedure of cleaning is followed as per SOP.
3.3 QA Manager: To ensure that the procedure is followed correctly as per SOP and to review
and authorize the documents.
4. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENTS:
4.1 Clean, lint free duster.
4.2 Nylon Scrubber.
4.3 5% solution of sodium hypochlorite

5. PROCEDURE:
Principle: N.A.
Frequency: As per schedule
5.1. Check that the incoming line valve is closed.
5.2. Drain/pump out the previously stored water from the tank.
5.3. Clean the tank by scrubbing with nylon scrubber and flushing with sufficient potable water
5.4. Sanitize the tank by scrubbing with nylon scrubber dipped in 5 % sodium hypochlorite solution.
(use rubber hand gloves & face shield)
5.5. Flush the tank with sufficient water.
5.6. Check the absence of cleaning agent by determining the available free chlorine in 25 ml
water as per SOP.

5.7. Check the cleanliness by taking 500 ml of potable water rinse in a glass beaker and ensure
Absence of sedimentation and foreign particles.
5.8. After ensuring absence of sedimentation and foreign particles drain out the water used to
flush the tank.
5.9. Collect the potable water by opening the incoming line valve.
5.10. Update the "tank cleaning' date and 'next due' date on the tag.
5.11 Safety measures and environment: Use rubber hand gloves & face shield while cleaning
the tank.

1. NOTE
1.1 Frequency of cleaning:
Potable water storage tanks related to production, Quality Control and stores are to
be cleaned quarterly.
Potable water storage tanks related to Toilets, Change rooms & Boiler are to be
cleaned six monthly.
1.2. Maintain the record of tank cleaning in the respective format
