1.  OBJECTIVE:
1.1 Multicolumn Distillation Plant is critical from the WFI manufacturing point of view, as WFI is used
as solvent or an ingredient in the final product. Hence the objective of this SOP is to describe a
procedure for the operation of multicolumn distillation plant to produce a good quality WFI.
2. SCOPE:

2.1 This SOP is applicable for the operation of Multicolumn Distillation Plant at Vital Healthcare
Pvt. Ltd. Nashik.

3. RESPONSIBILITY:
3.1 Maintenance Assistant supervisors: To follow the procedure correctly as per SOP.
3.2 Maintenance In-charge: To ensure that the procedure is followed correctly as per SOP.
3.3 QA Manager: To ensure that the procedure followed is correct and to review and authorize
the documents.
4. PROCEDURE:
Principle: Multicolumn distillation plant works on the principle of INTRESTATE HEAT
EXCHANGER, dramatically reducing the consumption of heating energy and
cooling water. Thus enables to produce a large volume of PYROGEN FREE
distillate water at a fraction of low cost rather conventional system.
Frequency: N.A.
4.1 CHECK :
4.1.1 Purified water is available in required quality and quantity.
4.1.2 Earthing in the Control panel is properly done.
4.1.3 Three phase in the MAINS are OK.
4.1.4 All the Rotameters valves are closed.
4.1.5 Open the drain valve on 1st and 4th column. (For removal of residual water) and
close again.
4.1.6 Steam supply is adequate and at required pressure.
4.2 CONTROL PANEL:
4.2.1. Put MAIN Switch to ‘ON’.
4.2.2. Put ‘ON’ the control panel.

4.2.3. See if 3 lamps for R, Y & B phase are glowing.

4.2.4. Put PUMP switch to ‘AUTO’.

4.3 FEED WATER :

4.3.1. The feed water must be of purified quality and must be processed though
Filters, Cation, Anion, and Mixed Bed Exchanger to get conductivity less than 1
micro siemens/cm.
4.3.2. Start the feed water pump.

4.4 COOLING WATER :

4.4.1. The cooling water is purified. The water is passed through a Monoblock Pump via
rotameter to the cooling coil. The water has to be at a minimum pressure of 1.0 kg/cm 2.
4.4.2. There is a coil provided inside the condenser located on the top of the frame for passing
cooling water. The Inlet of coil is given vial Rotameter while outlet is connected to stainless
steel pipe.
4.4.3. The hot water is available from this coil which is collected in purified water collection
Tank which can be used for washing applications.
4.5 DISTILLED WATER:
4.5.1. The distilled water comes out from the bottom of the condenser and finally through
the side port of the Solenoid Valve. The Distilled water is collected in distilled
water storage tank through the stainless steel pipe line.
4.6 DRAIN:
4.6.1. The drained water will come out from various sources.
4.6.2. 1st Column: (a) Steam Trap: The steam condensate passes out through Steam Trap
provided on the bottom of 1 st column
(b) Drain: The excess water in 1 st column can be drained out through a
needle valve.
4.6.3. 5th Column: The excess water is to be continuously drained out through a needle
valve provided at the bottom of the 5th Column.
4.6.4. The client has to provide the following Fittings on the Boiler Steam Line being
connected to the 1st Column.
a) Pressure Gauge.
b) Safety Valve: Safety Valve has to be set at 7.0 Kg/cm 2 pressure. If steam
pressure exceeds this limit the valve pops of steam. A pipe can be laid from exit

proof of safety valve to avoid spilling of steam /water near multi-column
c) Steam Trap: The steam condensate generated in the incoming pipeline can be
discharged out before passing Multicolumn Unit.
4.6.5. Bottom Port of Solenoid Valve: When the conductivity of distilled water exceeds
the set limit valve, the distilled water is drained out from bottom of Solenoid Valve .
