The Sampaguita

The sampaguita is our national flower. It is a small woody


plant. It cannot be destroyed by strong winds and heavy rains.
Its leaves are shiny, and it has a short stem. It has white flowers
that are small and sweet-smelling.
These tiny flowers can be made into pretty necklaces. These
pretty necklaces are called garlands. We can see people selling
sampaguita garlands in the streets or near the church.
This plant bears plenty of flowers in April, May, and June. New sampaguita
plant can grow from small branches.

The Coconut Tree

The coconut tree is the most


useful tree in the world. The coconut
tree is also called as the “Tree of Life”
because all the parts of the entire tree,
from top to bottom, are used to sustain
human life.
The leaves are woven into roofs and
walls. It is also used in cooking to wrap
food and rice cakes, and in handicrafts to
make bags, balls, fans & hats. The trunk of
the tree is made into charcoal and lumber for building construction and making
furniture.  The bark is also used in making paper pulp. The roots are made into
rope or twine and can be used for making beverages, dyes & medicines. The
fruit also provides refreshing water and white sweet meat for eating. The
coconut meat is also used to produce coconut oil that is used for cooking. Even
the unopened flower buds are the source of coconut sap, which is used to make
vinegar and alcoholic drinks (tuba and lambanog).
The Philippines is the world's second-largest producer of coconuts. The
production of coconuts plays an important role in the economy.
