STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Amidst ever-growing digital economies, the advents of Data Sciences coupled with Machine Learning
are poised to transform the dynamics of tech-driven businesses. From Pharmaceuticals to Logistics
and Aviation to Banking, a gamut of industries are rigorously involving in extracting the insights from
the oceans of data, that can add value to their business. Throughout the course of my academic and
professional career, I have attained an ample amount of skill-sets and knowledge that can play a
catalytic role in embarking upon my Master's expedition. As an aspiring Data Scientist, I keenly look
upon the opportunity of delving deeper into the core discipline of Data Science to acquire next-gen
techniques; not only to enhance the factor of my employability but also to utilize my learning as an
instrument of change.
The blend of my competency at Mathematical concepts of Linear Algebra, Statistics, and Probability
in conjunction with my inclination towards programming led me to pursue Computer Science
Engineering. I had a friend named Athmeeya in my batch who was deaf and dumb. We used to share a
good equation. I had learned hand sign language which I used not only to interact but also to help her
in learning the concepts of Engineering. Unfortunately, right after an year, she had to change her
course and shift to a special school; but her struggle and passion for technology had left a deep impact
on me. I realized that I could use this impact as a guiding force to move ahead in my career and
envision myself contributing through innovative solutions that could benefit not just my friend but a
lot more people like her. To acquire such a pragmatic approach, I went ahead to get enrolled in an M.
Tech course with specialization in Software Engineering, after having carved myself into a Skilled
Computer Engineer and traversing through a range of emerging technologies.
I firmly believe that M. Tech was the crucial turning point of my career as, during it, I have had a fair
share of encounters that paved way for my professional career ahead. During the phase of two years, I
sharpened my edge in handling the intricacies of Machine Learning concepts. It is noteworthy that the
study curriculum did not have Data Science as an elective so I chose Business Analytics from the
available electives and attained a Certification Course in Data Science-Ethics from Coursera. On one
hand, the rigorous framework of lectures, assignments, and lab sessions efficiently refined my hands-
on skill sets to tackle complex business problems through Machine Learning solutions, while on the
other hand, my internships played an instrumental role in getting resourceful industrial exposure. It is
because of the effective management dexterities that I have demonstrated my leadership skills as a
Class Representative, Coordinator, and Team Lead during my College education. I have also
showcased my multi-dimensional extra-curricular involvements in Sports, Hackathons, and Dance
Competitions that developed me inter-personally.
For my academic project in M. Tech, I amalgamated my knowledge of hand sign language with ML
and developed a hand gesture recognition system, using the CNN algorithm. Though this was a
herculean task for me as I initially had to accumulate datasets from Kaggle and other resources for the
model and then incorporate techniques like Data Augmentation and Transfer Learning that barely
helped. As a final resort, I had to click pictures of my hands to represent individual alphabets and then
process the raw data for training the model. Following up on this, I applied Data Processing,
Computer Vision, and Data Mining techniques to finally reap the benefits of my meticulous hard
work and completed my project with Convolution Neural Network and nearly 70% efficiency. My
major takeaway from this project was that I could foresee a panoramic view of a complex problem
and churn out improvised ML solutions fused with NLP. Additionally, I also figured out the void that
I have to fill by deep-diving in the vibrant Data Science segment to equip in-demand data techniques.
However, a fulfilling achievement for me was conducting research on Machine Learning for
automation software testing that successfully led my paper to be published in International Journal.
Moving ahead, I started working with Microchip Technologies Pvt. Ltd. initially as an intern. My
manager deployed me with the task of finding the issues and developments that could be done to
improvise the proprietary framework. I managed to prove my mettle by implementing ML solutions
to stabilize their library, which garnered me with huge appreciation and my appointment as a full-
fledged employee of the company. Handling a broad spectrum of automation projects required
consistent upgrades that I managed through one more certification course in Computer Vision from
Udemy. During my tenure, I have made exceptional strides to leverage the client requirements and
optimize my organization’s forecasted business strategies, but this phase has also been about a deep
introspection. I believe that studying the MS program in Data Science from an eminent institution like
John Hopkins University would enable me to unleash my true potentials in years down the line.
I have found your MS program, one of the most comprehensively designed curricula that would
impart me with cutting-edge knowledge to solve real-world data-driven problems by using a diverse
collection of scientific tools. Core courses of Statistics, Machine Learning, Optimization, and
Computing would strengthen my existing skill-sets and augment my technical hold on large data sets.
Apart from that, Data Visualization and Predictability is the most influential capability that I am
hoping to evolve under the fruitful guidance of Lecturers and Professors in your faculty, who are
backed by years of experience. Your program also provides a vivid choice of electives that are
industry-specific and elaborative. The most appealing feature of your Data Science program is the
research-oriented Capstone project that would allow me to apply learned data analysis techniques and
demonstrate their real-world applications. I am a volunteer at the U&I NGO and have also been
associated with a dumb and deaf special school in my city. Such a factor of my social relevancy has
consistently helped me to stay ahead of my counterparts. Hence during my abroad study tenure, I
would always step up to positively impact the University Community through my social and
community outreach efforts.
I have specifically chosen to study this discipline from the United States of America because
experiential learning is the hallmark of this nation’s Universities. John Hopkins University would
provide me a perfect platform to advance my learning in a multi-cultural environment that values
diversity and inclusion as essential to achieving excellence. Towards the other end of this program, I
can’t wait to put my learning to its litmus test by working at the proficient roles of Data Analyst,
Machine Learning Engineer, or Data Scientist. In the long term, I have plans to return to my
homeland and kick off a tech start-up, where I would implement insightful Data Acquisition,
Clustering, Cleaning, Extraction, Modelling, and Testing techniques to decode and solve various
problems in my society through productive models. For example, in detecting cyber frauds,
identification of deadly health issues, and improving the lives of specially challenged people; Data
science solutions can unbelievably play pivotal roles.
