How Did I Make a ChemDraw Image and Save it for Import to a Webpage

Making a ChemDraw Image:

To create a ChemDraw image you first need to open the ChemDraw software program. It
is located on the dock and looks like a benzene molecule with the letters “CD” in the
center of the benzene molecule. If it’s not located in the dock, you will need to open it
using the finder. To do this, double-click on the Finder button in the Dock. This button
is always in the Dock and looks like a smiley face. A new window will appear. On the
left side of that window is a button that says “Applications.” Click on this button. The
window will change and show you all of the software programs you can use on the
computer. Scroll down until you see folder that says CS ChemOffice 2004. Double click
on this folder. A new window will appear. In this window is an icon looks like a
benzene molecule. Beneath the icon, it say CS ChemDraw® Std. Double click on this
and ChemDraw will open.

Once ChemDraw opens, a blank screen will appear. To the left of this is a toolbar. It is
your palette for making images. There are a number of important buttons. An image of
the screen appears below.

Cyclic compounds

If you want to make an alkane, click on the straight line alkane and click on the main
screen and drag until you have the right number of carbons. The cyclic tool buttons will
place the image depicted in the button on the screen. To have the control to make a
single bond, use the single bond button. Once you make the single bond, you can place
most common elements at the end of the bond by typing the first letter of the element you
are interested in at the end of the bond.
Once you make the image you are interested in, use the select tool to highlight the image.
Once the image is highlighted, move the cursor to the File button at the top of the screen.
Click on the File button and move down to the Save As button. Click on the Save As
button. The following screen will appear.

If the Desktop button on the left is not highlighted, click on it. Click on the Web site files
folder. At the top of the screen is the Save As: area. Type the name of the you would
like to use to save this file. After doing this, there is a dropdown menu at the bottom of
the page. Change the format to GIF. The image should save as a GIF file in your “Web
site files” folder. This is the folder used to all files that go on your website. After this,
you can upload the files to your remote /html folder using either Fetch (see previous How
Did I Upload documents) or Dreamweaver. Press F8 to get the FTP window in
Dreamweaver.
