TITLE: "DETERMINATION OF MANNING'S COEFFICIENT"

OBJECTIVES:

 To determine the value of Manning's coefficient 'n' of flume or bed of the channel with the flow of water

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

i. Open channel flume

ii. Stopwatch
iii. Measuring scale.

THEORY:

In open channel water flows under atmospheric pressure. When water flows in an open channel, resistance is
offered to it, which causes loss of energy. A uniform flow will be developed if the resistance is balanced by
the gravity forces. The magnitude of the resistance when other physical factors of the channel are kept
unchanged depends on the velocity of the flow. A resistance formula proposed by Robert Manning for uniform
flow in open channel also known as Manning's formula is given as,

1 2 1
𝑣= 𝑅3 𝑆 2
𝑛

Where, Q= Av,

𝑄 1 2 1
= 𝑅3𝑆 2
𝐴 𝑛

2 1
𝐴𝑅 3 𝑆 2
𝑛=
𝑄

Where, n= roughness coefficient known as Manning's coefficient

A= cross section area of channel (wetted area)

R= Hydraulic radius (A/P)

S= bed slope

P= wetted perimeter

For given rectangular channel,

𝐴 𝑏𝑦
𝑅= = 𝑏+2𝑦 ; where b and y are breadth and depth of flow
𝑃
PROCEDURE:

1. The pump was started and water was allowed to flow through the flume of certain head difference.
2. The head difference and the wetted depth was observed and noted.
3. The flow of water and depth was varied for next observation.
4. Similarly, the procedure was repeated and numbers of readings were taken.

OBSERVATION:

Breadth of channel (b) = 0.078 m

Length of channel (l) = 1.920 m

RESULT:

Hence, from above experiment, the value of manning’s coefficient is obtained as 0.0001751.

CONCLUSION:

Similarly, the value of Manning’s coefficient of flume can be determined by the flow of water.
