Introduction to Error Codes

Machine Closedown
Machine errors (such as, jammed plates or module faults) are detected by the
system software which determines if the error is one of two types: Non-Fatal and
Fatal which appear as MMI icons:

FATAL ERROR NON-FATAL ERROR

As soon as a fatal error occurs, the system starts an automatic set of closedown
operations that leave the machine in a state where already advancing plates are
not at risk of accidental `fogging'. After a closedown has finished, the machine is
in a safe state for the operator to access the problem area. Closedown opera-
tions include:
1. Error Handling Screen: For both types of faults, the MMI presents a screen
which provides the operator with more information. See the Luxel Operator’s
Manual.
2. Media Auto-Recovery: All fatal errors start an automatic plate recovery pro-
cedure:
A) Fully-Automatic: Possible media in the nudge/takeaway feed head is
removed, paper is diverted and, where possible, the plate is returned to
the cassette.
B) Fully-Automatic: The cassette is parked back into the Autofeeder (fully-
automatic).
C) A plate in the drum is ejected.
D) Spinner on the traverse carriage is stopped and laser beams are blocked
from entering the drum.
E) Traverse carriage moves to a safe position to allow access to the drum.
2 MMI ERRORS AND RECOVERY

For certain errors, the plate has to be removed manually by the operator. For
most fatal errors, the plate handling system is designed so that not more
than one plate is aborted during an auto-recovery procedure.
1. Error Logging: Whenever the system reports a fatal error, a log of the failure
is automatically generated for retrieval as a SaveLog file on the RIP server.
While the logging is in progress, a Wait Timer icon appears on the Error
Handling screen. Do not attempt to reboot while the system is logging.
2. Aborted Jobs: Fatal and non-fatal errors can often cause the current job to
abort. Operators need to be aware of this problem by checking the RIP Log
record against the job description names on the output plates. Note that the
RIP Log only records jobs that have reached the scan stage.

Non-Fatal Error Handling Screens

Errors of this type are indicated by a Non-Fatal Error icon appearing on any of
the main menu screens (RUN, PAUSE or TOOLS). They are sometimes caused
by a transient system failure, in which case the current job may have to be
aborted. Alternatively, they are scheduled errors that appear when the system
detects an operator task is due - for instance, the interleaf bin needs to be emp-
tied. In the latter case, failure to carry out the task will eventually lead to a fatal
error.

Fatal Error Handling Screens

Fatal errors start an automatic closedown on the machine. System software on
the platesetter constantly monitors the operation of the machine and immedi-
ately alerts the operator if a system fault or a plate jam is detected. They always
need to be cleared before scanning can continue.
As soon as a fatal error occurs the MMI immediately displays the appropriate
Error Handling screen. A set of buttons underneath offer three possible options:
1. Run Diagnostics: runs a set of self tests for further checks on the failed
module. On this screen the Run Diagnostics button is not active because
the error is best cleared from Machine Info.
2. Return: returns the operator to the last screen. An alternative option is the
Reboot button for restarting the machine.
3. Machine Info: this option (if active) gives more information on how to clear
the error.

Servicing Recommendations
Fault-finding from error codes may involve further investigations using Main
Diagnostics to determine the exact cause of the failure. Some useful tools and
strategies for a Luxel CTP are, for instance:
1. Collecting further data on a fatal error by checking the Error Log file.
2. Running a diagnostic test with Verbose on.
3. Determining whether the fault is intermittent (often recovered with a reboot)
or continuous.
LUXEL PLATESETTER 3

4. Accessing the FFEI SIO site for the latest TIS release on common faults with
their recommended recovery procedure.
5. Enable and run the Debug facility to obtain more complete report of system
events. Details on how to use Debug is in the product Engineer’s Reference
Guide.

Recovering from Errors

Fatal media errors are likely to result in a plate jam if it is not possible to auto-
recover the plate from the PTM or output. Operators need to be aware that after
an Error Handling screen appears, the machine is in a state where an inter-
locked cover can be opened. They should not attempt a reboot if a media
4 MMI ERRORS AND RECOVERY

jam is suspected. Instead, they need to manually recover the aborted plate and
restart the machine. If the fault keeps occurring intermittently, investigate the
possibility of:
1. software/bus timing problems causing the operator to constantly reboot
2. sensor/cabling failure
3. CAN network failure arising from FHMB connections or cables
4. motor/motor power failure.
Other faults may not appear as Fatal errors on the MMI but are detected if the
scanned image quality starts to degrade or display irregular patterning. Areas to
investigate are:
1. optics base component aging of the laser and EOD
2. traverse carriage creep
3. spinner mirror contamination
4. dirt on the traverse drive rail
5. low laser exposure levels.
