Hydrostatic steering

The steering unit is part of the hydrostatic power steering system. Usually the steering unit is connected to the steering wheel
through a steering column. During the steering, the steering wheel moves a gear with outer cogs which has an orbital move-
ment respect to the outer toothed gear. Inside the steering unit, the gerotor, which has the function of volumetric dosing unit,
releases an amount of oil that is proportional to the turning angle made by the steering wheel. The distribution is controlled by
a special rotating dispenser which is coaxial respect to the steering column (sleeve valve).
When the steering system works in hydraulic modality, the torque requested to the steering wheel is very low because the
energy necessary to steer is provided by the pressing/flowing fluid. This allows an easier and a more reliable directional control
of the vehicle.

In case of emergency (for example a breakdown in the pump or a lack of pressing fluid) the steering unit works as a manual
pump allowing the operator to control the vehicle even in disadvantaged conditions (obviously applying a stronger torque to
the steering wheel).

OGNIBENE steering units can be easily installed on both low and high power vehicles (tractors, forklift trucks, material handling
vehicles and industrial machinery in general, municipal and garden tractors, ..) and can be customized completely according to
customers’ specific needs.

There are many different configurations for every type of steering unit, according to the kind of displacement and pressure load
required by the vehicle. In addition, the single steering unit can be equipped with one or more valves (for example check valves,
shock valves, suction valves ) in order to improve the performance of the vehicle.

OGNIBENE steering units allow to control the steering wheel in every driving situation; therefore, they guarantee a reliable per-
formance, as well as a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

Product customization
Choice of steering
OGNIBENE offers tailor-made solutions to all of its customers thanks to its vast and long experience consolidated in the last 60
years of activity.
After having received customer’s detailed specifications, we will be able, within few weeks, to plan, engineer and manufacture
a first prototype to present for approval and tests.

The first step consists in choosing the type of hydraulic system among the following ones:

• Open Center steering system

• Power Beyond steering system
• Closed Center steering system
• Load Sensing steering system
In case a Load Sensing system is chosen, there are two additional possibilities:

• Load Sensing Static steering system

• Load Sensing Dynamic Steering system

Secondly, it has to be decided whether the steering unit is “Reaction” or “Non reaction”.
The NON REACTIVE version (ON) prevents the external forces passing from the ground to the wheels to arrive to the steering
wheel. The REACTIVE version (OR) instead let the forces pass through, causing a reaction to the steering wheel that is propor-
tional to the movement of the steering cylinder. This latter version requires the same volumes in both the two chambers of the
cylinder.
Below scheme represents the steps in order to correctly select the steering unit features.

Calculation of steering unit

V (cm³ - in³) : cylinder volume
n (rev): required number of steering wheel revolutions from lock to lock
• The required theoretical steering unit displacement (Dt) is calculated with the formula Dt = (V/n)
• The real steering unit displacement D will be the available displacement closest to the theoretical displacement
R (rev/min): minimum required steering wheel speed
• The minimum oil flow (l/min – US gal/min) is calculated with the formula Q = D x R x 10⁻³

Hydrostatic steering systems

Open Center Version

Open center hydrostatic steering system

The open center steering unit, when it’s in a neutral position, has an internal connection that carries out an operation of short
circuit of the fluid from the pump directly to the tank with a low pressure drop. Below schemes show the two types of available
open center hydraulic circuits, which are Non Reactive or Reactive

Load sensing Version
Load sensing hydrostatic steering system
This unit is a closed center steering unit equipped with an oil port, which provides a pressure signal (static or dynamic), that is
able to control a flanged priority valve (VPF) or in-line priority valve (VPL). This system controls the flow rate necessary to make
the steering unit work correctly. It can be non reactive (LS) or reactive (LSR).

The most important characteristic of a Power Beyond stee-
ring valve consists in supplying oil for steering autonomously L R
without using flow dividers or priority valves. This brings the
advantage to concentrate all the steering system circuit into
a smaller space.

The closed center steering unit is characterized, in neutral po- L R

Technical data

Valves configuration
ST steering units can be integrated with one or more of the following valves:

1. The relief valve protects the steering unit in case of excessive pressure. In addition, it works as by pass with the cylinder,
when the cylinder itself is at the end of stroke.
The behavior of the relief pressure related to the changing in the oil flow is represented in the following chart.
The measurements are done with an oil viscosity of 21 cSt (100 SUS).

Note:
The relief valve setting is actually the difference between the pressures in P and T line. Relief valve is not available for Closed Center
hydraulic circuit.

The relief pressure can be set according to customer requirements.

2. The shock valves are direct acting, and they protect the pump from high pressure peaks which may take place during ste-
ering on rugged fields. These valves are set at a flow rate of 1,5l/min (0,4 US gal/min), at a pressure usually 60 bar (870,23psi)
higher than relief valve setting.
The shock valves can be set according to customer requirements.

The table below shows the standard settings for the relief valve and shock valves.

Set Relief valve setting Shock valve setting

3. The suction valves allow oil to be pulled from the tank to stop cavitation in the steering cylinder. To ensure proper function
and correct suction, a back pressure valve needs to be fitted in the tank line.

4. The check valve prevents oil from flowing backwards into the pump line, when steering against a high pressure on the cylin-
der side. In addition, this valve avoids the generation of air inside the steering unit in case of pump’s accidental break down,
guaranteeing total efficiency of manual steering.

Technical data

Valves configuration
STV steering units can be integrated with one or more of the following valves:

1. The relief valve protects the steering unit in case of excessive pressure. In addition, it works as by pass with the cylinder, when
the cylinder itself is at the end of stroke.
The behavior of the relief pressure related to the changing in the oil flow is represented in the chart.
The measurements are done with an oil viscosity of 21 cSt (100 SUS).

Note:
The relief valve setting is actually the difference between the pressures in P and T line.

The table below shows the standard settings for the relief valve and shock valves.

3. The check valve prevents oil from flowing backwards into the pump line, when steering against a high pressure on the cylin-
der side. In addition, this valve avoids the generation of air inside the steering unit in case of pump accidental break down,
guaranteeing total efficiency of manual steering.

4. The suction valves allow oil to be pulled from the tank to stop cavitation in the steering cylinder. To ensure proper function
and correct suction, a back pressure valve needs to be fitted in the tank line.

Manual steering pressure

In case the oil flow from the steering system pump is too small or fails, the steering unit will automatically work as a manual
steering pump. In this way the emergency steering is granted on the vehicle. Below chart shows the pressure values relevant
to each displacement. The applied torque is 120 Nm (1062,1 lbf·in) a value which is considered to be the maximum torque that
can be exerted by a normal operator.

VPL/VPF Priority valves
Priority valves in-line (VPL) and flanged-on (VPF) are used in steering systems with load sensing steering units. In load sensing
system, steering always has priority
Priority valve are available for static and dynamic steering system.

• Static steering systems have no oil flow in the LS connection when the steering unit is in neutral position.
• Dynamic steering systems have oil flow in the LS connection from the priority valve to the steering unit, when the steering
unit is in neutral position.

During the steering, the flow is distributed in the priority valve so that the necessary quantity of oil to steer is directed to the CF
(controlled flow) connection; while the remaining oil flow is directed to the EF (excess flow) connection.

Technical data

Valves configuration
STD steering units can be integrated with one or more of the following valves:

Technical data

Valves configuration
STM steering units can be integrated with one or more of the following valves:

1. The pressure relief valve protects the steering unit in case of excessive pressure. In addition, it works as by pass with the cylinder,
when the cylinder itself is at the end of stroke.
The behavior of the relief pressure related to the changing in the oil flow is represented in following chart.
The measurement is done with an oil viscosity of 21 cSt (100 SUS).
The curve is done setting the relief pressure at 75bar (1087,78 psi) at 12 l/min (3,17 US gal/min)

Note:
The relief valve setting is actually the difference between the pressures in P and T line.

The setting range for shock valves is from 115bar (1667,94psi) up to 200 bar (2900,75 psi), and it can be chosen according to
customer requirements.

3. The suction valves allow oil to be pulled from the tank to stop cavitation in the steering cylinder. To ensure proper function
and correct suction, a back pressure valve needs to be fitted in the tank line.

4. The check valve prevents oil from flowing backwards into the pump line, when steering against a high pressure on the cylin-
der side. In addition, this valve avoids the generation of air inside the steering unit in case of pump accidental break down,
guaranteeing total efficiency of manual steering.

Manual steering pressure

In case the oil flow from the steering system pump is too small or fails, the steering unit will automatically work as a manual ste-
ering pump. In this way the emergency steering is granted on the vehicle. The below chart shows the pressure values relevant
to each displacement. The applied torque is 80 Nm (708,06 lbf·in) a value which is considered to be the maximum torque that
can be exerted by a normal operator.
