WORK EDUCATION II

SEWING
 WHAT IS SEWING?

Sewing is the process of using a needle and thread to

connect pieces of fabric or attach them to fabric surfaces. It's a
practical skill used to make or repair clothing. It can also function
as a creative outlet.

 HISTORY OF SEWING

Without the artistry of hand sewing, the history of the

sewing machine would not exist. Humans started sewing by
hand approximately 20,000 years ago, where the earliest
needles were constructed from bones or animal horns and the
thread made from animal sinew. Our innate desire to be creative
explains the logical path of wanting to enhance sewing methods
and make them less time-consuming. Enter the Industrial
Revolution in the 18th Century, where the necessity to minimize
manual sewing in factories became crucial.

Thousands of years of sewing by hand passed until the

19th century, which marked the first invention of the sewing
machine. Barthélemy Thimonnier – sometimes
spelt Chimonnier – was a French inventor who created the first
sewing machine.

Shortly after patenting the machine in 1830, Thimonnier opened

a clothing factory which utilized his machines to create army
uniforms. He was the first to mass produce such machines,
contributing significantly to the history of sewing.

 PURPOSES/REASONS OF SEWING

1.) The sewing machine was invented to help people sew. It is a

fantastic invention that has contributed to the literacy of women.
As women were released from the never-ending hours spent
keeping their families dressed, they had time to learn how to
read.

2.) Develop fine motor skills

3.) Sewing help build self-confidence and confidence in their

skills

4.) Sewing teaches how to be patience

5.) Sewing help practice communicating and follow instructions

6.) Sewing make use of our imagination and creativity

WASTE/GARBAGE MANAGEMENT
 What is Waste/Garbage Management?
A waste management system is the strategy an organization
uses to dispose, reduce, reuse, and prevent waste. Possible
waste disposal methods are recycling, composting, incineration,
landfills, bioremediation, waste to energy, and waste
minimization. As for waste management, it is the measures
utilized to manage waste in its entire life cycle, from waste
generation to disposal or recovery.

 History of Waste/Garbage Management

The Philippines has endeavored to improve its

management of solid waste through the passage of RA 9003 or
the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act that provides for a
systematic, comprehensive and ecological waste management
program to ensure the protection of public health and the
environment.  It mandates the bureau to provide secretariat
support to the National Solid Waste Management Commission in
the implementation of the solid waste management plans and
prescribes policies to achieve the objectives of the National
Ecology Center that is in charge of information dissemination,
consultation, education and training of various local government
units on ecological waste management.

The ecological solid waste management program is

expected to assist Local Government Units in implementing RA
9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act particularly
in the development of their 10 yr. SWM Plan, closure and
rehabilitation of dumpsites, establishment of Materials Recovery
Facilities, and an environmentally sound disposal system.

The issuance of Guidelines and provisions of technical

support in the establishment and operation of Waste To Energy
facilities will enhance the sustainability of disposal system for
municipal residual wastes to all provinces and highly urbanized
areas. The significant contribution of this project is expected to
enhance the economic development of the country through
formalizing the waste collection and recycling, and promotion of
job opportunities. It also helps the economy to reduce reliance
on imported oils and increased in power generation.

 How to establish a Waste/Garbage Management Plan

 Specify who is responsible for managing waste on site.

 Establish goals and objectives.
 Estimate the waste types and amounts involved.
 Set targets for reducing the amount of each waste sent to
landfill.
 Describe recycling/reuse methods for each material.
 Identify the waste destinations and transport modes,
including what materials are being segregated on site for
reuse or recycling.
 Track progress.
 Describe special measures for material use and handling.
 Describe communication and training to support and
encourage participation from everyone on site.
 If applicable, describe the sequencing and methods for
deconstruction projects.
 Project review.

 Purpose of Waste/Garbage Management

 Waste management is an important element of environmental

protection. Its purpose is to provide hygienic, efficient and
economic solid waste storage, collection, transportation and
treatment or disposal of waste without polluting the
atmosphere, soil or water system. Waste management is
important as it saves the environment from the toxic
effects of inorganic and biodegradable element present
in waste.
