Research Problem: The competitive environment in school, coupled with the demands of

different subjects, has caused senior high school students to feel overwhelmed. Students feel the

pressure of having to cope up with both their academic and their own personal lives at home.

Due to the mental burden that schoolwork and related activities bring, students often feel

stressed, resulting in an overall decline in school-related work. In order to help alleviate the

pressure off their shoulders, they turn to mobile games as their form of stress reliever.

Overarching Question:

How does mobile games act as stress relievers to students?

Specific Questions:

1. What is the most commonly played mobile game among senior high school students?

2. How frequently do SHS students play mobile games in school/at home?

3. What are the common stressors among SHS students?

Background of the Study

Student mental health is as important as his physical health. Gone are the days when the primary

focus when it comes to health is only the physique, considering that the mental health of every

student is also very important. In fact, according to research, as per the article published on

Charles Darwin University in Australia, good mental health has been associated with better

learning and productivity, as well as the creation of positive social relationships.

There are certain factors however, that could affect a student’s mental health. According to

Clinical Psychiatry Times, a study conducted on a number of students in the U.S. in 2017

showed that about 75% of young adults aged 18 and above have at one point or another

experienced a feeling of hopelessness. While there were many factors that could contribute to

such a state among students, one of those identified by researchers was academic pressures. The

inability to address the burden that it creates makes students become vulnerable and could even

lead to suicidal thoughts or injury.

Having identified how academic pressures can have a dire effect on students’ mental health, the

researchers are trying to determine a possible and easy way to relieve stress among senior high

school students. According to a study published on East Carolina University, being able to play

casual video games may help in reducing anxiety and depression. Following this notion, with

almost all of senior high school students owning a smartphone, the researchers would like to find

out if being able to play mobile games on their smartphones may also be their means to relieve

stress from academic pressures.
