INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

The literature works often describe about the real of life, and it also gives many
lessons like it happen in the real life. There are so many values that can be taken from
the literature work, likes film, novel, poem, short story, drama, etc. One of them will
give value and lesson for life with the different way.

In novel we can read that, then we can find characters, plots, characterization,
themes, point of view and settings. From drama we will find the same thing likes
novel if we just read the scripts, but when we see the show, it will be just like a film,
although the analyze still remain about characters, characterization, plots, point of
view, settings, and themes. From the poem and poetry we can also analyze or take the
value from reading it, but the poem and poetry need us to do a bit deep analyze. It is
because they use an unusual language, so we can’t easily find what is the meaning.

This works will take the theme about the strugle of person who reach his dream,
he strugles for his dream until he can catchs his dream, and as we know there is no
something free to be reached, all is needed to be strugled. We will learn about his
character in reaching his dream that can be example for us to catch our dream. If we
see his strugle it can be related with the famous theory called “American Dream”,
there is quote about it:

According to American Dream Anthropology, or "American dream" , is a

belief, believed by many in the United States. They believe, through hard work,
sacrifice, and determination, regardless of social status, one can get a better life.
This idea is rooted in a belief that the United States is a "city upon a hill", "a
light unto the nations"), which has value and wealth that has since the arrival of
European explorers to the next generation. (Febry:2010)
The theory of American dream above explain that people should struggle to reach
their dreams. The people should brave to do everything extraordinary. This theory
proof if we must do the best for something that we want.

There is film that been published in the cinema in Indonesia, the film has started to be
publised in 2017. The film titled “ The Greatest Showman”, the main character ia
Phineas Taylor Barnum or the people usually as PT. Barnum, he is main character in
the film and also the person who use the American Dream theory as his motive of his
live , PT Barnum gives us many lesson for our live through the film “The Greatest
Showman”, it can be as the explanation below:

The story of PT Barnum, a visionary who rose from scratch to create a

mesmerizing spectacle that became a sensation all over the world. The Greatest
Showman is a movie that has been developed since 2009, featuring a
contemporary music show, Jackman acted as a showman at the time, with the
excess of making everyone gullible. Over these advantages tried to make the
circus Barnum & Bailey, but until now the most popular circus around the

The film show about PT Barnum who never give up to reach his dream, and his
struggle to make his dream became true with his wife and children and the people
who has special excessive.

After all, this paper will focus in analyze the character and succesfull journey
PT Barnum as the founder circus in the film “The Greatest Showman” reflect
American Dream theory. The Greatest Showman is taken from real story and the film
has the main character that has been succesfull as a founder of circus, although there
are so many obstacles, he has the character that finally make his dream came
true.According to the explanation above this will be analyzed by watching movie, and
then find the character and characterization of the main character in the film and his
succesfull journey as a founder of circus which reflects American dream theory.

B. Problem Formulation

C. Objectivities of the Research

The study answers about the problem formulation. The study will explain about the character
and characterization and successfull journey pf Phineas Taylor Barnum a founder of the
circus in the greatest showman that reflection American Dream theory.

D. Benefit of the research

For the Writer

The research for writer give the writer the knowledge about the literature study in specific in
analyze the film, the knowledge about the character and characterization then about the
American Dream theory.

For the Reader

The research share about the scientist about the literature studies for the reader that I hope it
can use as the useful thing in the real life of the reader and it can add the knowledge the
reader about literature.

E. Method of Research

This research uses the qualitative method in conducting. Qualitative which is

one of method that is used in research, is a research using verbal data and other non
numeric data as the basic analysis and in solving the problems these are studied.

F. Data Analysis

This research use descriptive analysis technique, the writer collects some data
from many sources as book and websites those related to this research.

G. Instrument of the Research

This research use main instrument by watching the film “The Greatest
Showman” to understand the scene, except that the writer also collects some related
data by writing down some dialogs in this film and making some snapshot of the
scene support this research

The unit of Analysis in this research is the film “The Greatest Showman” which is
directed by Michael Gracey which is released in 2017
