Proposed Research Grammar, Writing, and Research Skills of Senior High School
Students
Title:
Statements of the This study aimed to determine the grammar skills,
writing skills, and research skills of senior high school
Problem: students of Feliciano Yusay Consing National High School
(for Descriptive Study) for the school year 2019-2020.
More specifically, this study sought to answer the
following questions:
1. What is the level of grammar skills of the
respondents?
2. What is the level of writing skills of the
respondents?
3. What is the level of research skills of the
respondents?
4. Are there significant relationships among the
research skills, grammar skills, and writing skills of the
respondents?

Statement of Based on the aforementioned problems, the following

hypotheses were formulated:
Hypotheses 1. There are no significant relationships among the
(use the null research skills, grammar skills, and writing skills of the
hypothesis) respondents.

Significance of the
Study The result of the study will be essential and
important to the following namely: principal, parents,
(Identify at least 4 teachers, students and future researcher.
significance of your Principal. The outcome of the study will provide
study) background on the strategy to be recommended to the
teachers. This study will motivate them to use the
appropriate strategies that would improve the student’s
grammar skills, writing skills and research skills.
Parents. The result of the study will inform the
parents regarding the performance of their child. It is
important that they will be made aware of the findings of
this study since their cooperation and proper assistance
are greatly needed by their children.
Students. The result of this study will be of help to
the students as they will be able to determine the
importance of grammar rules and will know the proper steps
in writing their research study. The result of this study
will provide them information on how they will go on to
their research paper writing.
Teachers. Knowing how their students perform,
teachers will be made aware of the entry performance of the
students. This will also provide insights which will help
them in formulating strategies for strengthening grammar,
writing, and research skills of the students which will
rebound to the improvement of these skills. Knowing the
factors that influence these skills of the students,
teachers will have basis as to the manner of instruction
that they will enforce to cater the needs of the students.
Thus, creating a stress-free classroom environment and lead
to a better progress on scholastic performance.
Future Researchers. The information from this study
may give insight into the performance of students in
their grammar, writing, and research skills.
Researchers who are interested in this area will
benefit from the results if they will conduct related
researches to different groups of students, location,
and even races. This study will serve as a
springboard for the conduct of similar studies that
will contribute to the teachers and administrators
in-depth knowledge about these skills.

Definition of Terms Grammar Skills refers to the skill set of the students that
allows them to utilize and combines words or bits of words
(Define important in order for them to form longer units of meaning. (Ur,

negative statements. This will be interpreted as Very
Competent (16.01-20.00), Competent (12.01-16.00),
Moderately Competent (8.01-12.00), Less Competent (4.01-
8.00), or Not Competent (0.00-4.00)

Writing Skills refers to the art of forming graphic symbols

that is letter in which relate to the sounds when the
writers make in speaking. In this sense, the symbols have
to be arranged according to certain convention, to form
words, and words have to be arranged to form sentence
(Byrne, 2018).
In this study, “writing skills” referred to the score
of students in a researcher made-questionnaire based on the
given rubric. This will be interpreted as Exemplary (13-16
points); Accomplished (9-12 points); Developing (5-8
points); and Beginning (0-4 points).

Research Skills refer to the facility or potential of

individuals, organizations, and systems to undertake and
disseminate effectively and efficiently high-quality
research (Salom, 2013).
In this study, “research skills” referred to the
score of students in a 35-item adopted and revised
questionnaire from Montemayor (2013). This will be
interpreted as Very Competent (28.01-35.00), Competent
(21.01-28.00), Moderately Competent (14.01-21.00), Less
Competent (7.01-14.00), Not Competent (0.00- 7.00).

Delimitation of the The survey- correlational research design was used in this
study to determine the levels of grammar, writing, and
Study research skills of the Senior High School students of
Feliciano Yusay Consing National High School for the school
year 2019-2020.
This study covered the two hundred seventy-six (276)
senior high school students, taken from the sample
population of eight hundred ninety (890) students who were
officially enrolled in senior high school class during the
first semester. The participants who participated in the
study were randomly selected.
There were three sets of questionnaires for this
research. A 20-item test for grammar skills, question which
scored for 16 points based on the rubrics for writing
skills, and a 35-item adopted and revised questionnaire for
research skills.
The mean, standard deviation, frequency count, and
percentage as a statistical tool were utilized for the
analyses of descriptive data and Pearson r was used as the
inferential statistical tools to determine the relationship
among the variables in the study. All inferential tests
were set at 0.05 alpha level of significance.
