MBL (Myanmar Brewery Limited), which has an approximately 80% market share and has been

producing, distributing, and selling Myanmar Beer and Andaman Gold for more than 20 years, is the
most powerful local company.

Beer market in Myanmar. A Japanese beer firm called Kirin Holdings purchased a 55% share in MBL in
2015 and introduced the Kirin Ichiban brand in 2016. Also, in 2017, Kirin made a US$4.3 million
investment in MEHL (Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited), which is the owner of Mandalay Brewery,
Mandalay Spirulina Beer, and the producer of Mandalay Lager Beer. The Dutch brewing corporation
Heineken opened a 60 million dollar plant in Myanmar in 2015 with its joint venture partner APB
Alliance Brewery, which produces Tiger, Heineken, ABC, and Regal Seven. The Danish brewery firm,
Carlsberg, beganDue to restrictions on beer imports and high tax rates, there is still a significant
underground beer trade in Myanmar. According to Euromonitor, 30 percent of the beer market in
Myanmar (1 million hectoliters) comes from

illegal beer, mostly from China (20%) and Thailand (80%). Myawaddy, Kaw Thaung, Tachileik, and Muse
are the primary routes used to smuggle illegal beer. Particularly in rural areas and border towns, where
local beer brands have distribution issues due to infrastructure, smuggled beer brands are easily
accessible, openly transported, stored, and advertised.
