LEARNING TASK NO. 1

Conceptualizing Scientific Idea

Rationale of the Culminating Activity

In this course, students, under the guidance of the instructor, will identify a scientific
or technological problem, design and apply an appropriate methodology, formulate a
hypothesis, and draw conclusions based on the invention they want to develop. At the end of
the semester, each group will prepare a scientific report to be presented in a classroom-based
evaluation. Once the best scientific report is selected, the class will work together in crafting
the prototype of the invention or innovation described in the said report and will present and
defend their scientific work in a forum.

Lesson 1 Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society

After you have gained knowledge about the interrelationship of science, technology, and
society. Distinguishing the characteristics between invention, discovery, and innovation, you
are now to start asserting the necessity of each phase of the scientific method into a scientific
study by acting and thinking like an inventor. Your observations from your environment as
the beginning step to the inquiry may include what you read and watched in various
information media outlets, or from real-life experiences.
Below is the list of steps you need to follow to accomplish the individual task for Lesson
1.
1. Assuming the role of an inventor, think of something you can create that has not been
invented yet or innovate something from the existing technologies today to further
enhance its function. You may conceptualize an idea that is beyond expectations as
long as it is realistic and feasible.
2. List at least three (3) ideas that you have conceptualized and classify them as
inventions or innovations.
1. Insulated Tumbler with a Storage Compartment– INNOVATION
2. Lampshade Using Paper Cup - INNOVATION
3. Safe Wallet with GPS Tracker- INVENTION
3. The modern definition of technology states that technology is an application of
scientific knowledge, laws, and principles to produce services, materials, tools, and
machines aimed at solving real-world problems. This definition may help you to
prepare the context of their invention or innovation following the guide questions
below:

EVSU’s Vision: A leading state university in technological and professional education

EVSU’s Mission: Develop a strong technologically and professionally competent productive human resource imbued with positive
values needed to propel sustainable development
Core Values: E – EXCELLENCE | V – VALUE-LADEN | S – SERVICE-DRIVEN | U – UNITY IN DIVERSITY
3.1 What name can best describe your conceptualized idea? Be creative in the
formulation of the name based on your initial description of the characteristics of
your idea.
ANSWER:
1. Hydration Insulated Tumbler On The Go
2. Mini Shady Lamp
3. Smart Safe Wallet

3.2 What scientific knowledge, laws, and principles support it?

ANSWER:
1. This insulated tumbler with storage compartment invention provide high
quality doubled walled stainless steel to eliminate condensation and
maintain your beverage’s temperature by not allowing the heat or cold to
escape.
2. This mini lampshade is battery operated and has a switch. The scientific
knowledge that can support is that the battery energy is converted to light
and heat. The amount of battery energy it creates a circuit that causes bulb
to light up.
3. This wallet are made up of invisible electronics that make it a better
alternative than the regular ones. The GPS module which makes tracking
of lost or stolen wallet. When your wallet is in the “lost mode”, this GPS
tracker would be used to track its exact location.

3.3 What real-world problems can it solve or address?

ANSWER:
1. While jogging, running, or working out while in public, it is not nice to
have your keys clicking in your pocket or a hanging running wallet around
your waist. You can concentrate on your daily exercise routine by using
the hidden storage compartment in your water bottle to keep all of your
valuable safe and secure while storing all your essentials including cash,
keys, and cards to clear up space in your pocket.

2. The bare light bulb can damage and hurt your eyes, so this mini lampshade
is to diffuse the light from the bulb to protect your eyes from bulb’s glare.
The main purpose of this lampshade it is not used for reading but to
illuminate the room softly and it is solely for aesthetic purpose for an
additional decorative effect in your room.

3. Most people have a problem with misplacing things especially wallet. In

case you lose it, this wallet utilizes crowd source GPS tracker to find it. It
also has a biometric fingerprint sensor to unlock.

4. Cite your references used in answering the guide questions following APA
format.

5. The completed task will be presented to the class and submitted to the instructor
for checking which will be evaluated following the attached rubric.
Rubric
Criteria Description Points
Variety of ideas The idea is interesting, new, or helpful, making an original
and contexts contribution that includes identifying a previously unknown
(40%) problem, issue, or purpose. Ideas represent a startling
variety of important concepts from different contexts or
disciplines.
Variety of sources Ideas are combined in original and surprising ways to solve
(25%) a problem, address an issue, or make something new. The
idea was drawn from a wide variety of sources, including
different texts, media, resource persons, or personal
experiences.
Organization Information is very organized into excellently constructed
(15%) paragraphs. An introductory sentence, at least 3 details, and
a concluding sentence are provided.
