Lesson 5

Inside atoms 7.5 Proton and nucleon numbers

Worksheet 7.5.1

Proton and nucleon numbers

Read the definitions in the box.

Proton number is the number of protons in an atom of an element.

Protons and neutrons are nucleons.
Nucleon number is the number of nucleons in an atom.

The table shows the numbers of protons and neutrons in atoms of some
elements. Each element is represented by a letter. The letters are not the
chemical symbols of the elements.
• Use beans or bottle tops to make models of the atoms, including their
nuclei and electrons.
• Complete the table. You will need the periodic table at the end of the
Student Book to fill in the last column.
