7. Please state the current issues and challenges and how the project will assist in solving
them.

Kangemi is an informal settlement in Nairobi. It is located in the Westland area of Nairobi.

Kangemi slum has a population of about 200,000, and an estimate of 70% of this population
unemployed and lives below the poverty line. As an informal settlement area, Kangemi is
characterised by poor infrastructure and a very high population density resulting into ramshackle
structures and overcrowding in the limited social facilities available. The crisis of poor
infrastructure, overcrowding, limited resources and poor sanitation facilities is exacerbated further
by a high disease and morbidity rate.

At the heart of Kangemi is St. Joseph Technical Secondary School, a school run by St. Joseph the
Worker Catholic Church. The School offers quality secondary education as well as practical
vocational skills for livelihood to the most vulnerable youth in Kangemi and its environs at an
affordable cost.

In a bid to improve the infrastructure of the slum, the Nairobi City government has over the past
few years been trying to expand Thiongo Road near which our school is located. In the process,
our school toilet facilities plus kitchen were destroyed. This has caused a risk in the sense that now
the toilets available are not enough for the student population that over the years has been rising.
Lack of good and enough toilet facilities and hygiene education is a big problem in St. Joseph
Technical Secondary School. There is acute shortage of toilets in the school and a serious
deterioration of the existing ones due to over use. This has been exacerbated by the need to have
not only toilets but also enough water for use to maintain the health and hygiene of the
beneficiaries.

So as to urgently address the problems, the project intends to construct sufficient, accessible,
private, secure, clean, and gender sensitive toilets for school students and staff. The project will
also address the problem of water though water harvesting given the abundant rains in Nairobi.
This will be possible in two ways:

a. First will be the construction of user-friendly toilets to help serve the current need. This
will augment the need that will be increased once the construction of the community hall
and Library is complete (the construction is being funded by the Italian Bishops
Conference). We intend to construct the toilets just next to the Hall/library wall so that it
will serve both the student population and the community that will be coming to use the
library and hall facilities.

b. Water and sanitation will be addressed through water harvesting during the rainy season.
This will involve the construction of an underground water reservoir that will store water
during the times of plenty. The water will be used in times of scarcity. This will be aided
by the raised tank to serve the needs. The water from the reservoir will be pumped into the
raised tank by a generator which will be purchased in the process. This will ensure that the
students and other beneficiaries have sufficient water for washing and toilet use. The two
tanks will reduce on the amount of water sourced from the city government that is often
erratic in supply.

2
Making sanitation accessible is not only critical to saving lives, but also the precious time and
money the victims spend in trying to recover from illnesses. This project aims to provide students
and staff with adequate access to toilet facilities and clean water for hand-washing and other
sanitation needs. Generally, the concept aims at creating a convenient, functional and attractive
toilet block of a good standard that will enhance clean environment, healthy learning and proper
development of the students and beneficiaries.

8. If this is an existing programme, what is the state of current facility/equipment? (Please

attach pictures).
The population of the St Joseph Technical Secondary School is growing rapidly over the years;
more students are enrolling in the school and the number of staff also increasing thus the need to
have modern facilities. Previously the Vocational Training section had toilet facilities, but these
facilities were brought down by the government authorities in order to expand the road that is just
behind the school. This led to acute shortage of toilets at the institution and forced the students and
staff from the Vocational Training section to share the toilets meant for the Secondary School
section. These toilets do not adequately meet the students’ sanitation needs. With the rising
population of the students, these toilets are dangerous and unhygienic.

The need for a conducive learning environment at the Technical School cannot be over
emphasized. There is a psychological correlation between a clean and decent learning environment
and assimilation levels. Learning is enhanced when the school (by extension the toilets) are in
good conditions hence better learning outcomes.

9. What kind of effort has the applicant organisation / beneficiary community made to solve
the above problem?

St Joseph has strived over the years to provide quality education in well equipped modern
facilities. The institution has standard classrooms and other social buildings that make learning
environment conducive to students and teachers. There are plans to upgrade these facilities into
international standards to even make the environment easier for learning. With the high population
of beneficiaries in the school, the institution had well equipped toilets facilities to serve both the
vocational training section and the Secondary section. However, the toilets at the vocational
training section were demolished by the government authorities when they earmarked the area for
road expansion. This led to shortage of such facilities in the institution. The school opted to share
the toilets at the secondary section with the vocational training students. The project is requesting
for funds from Japan Embassy in Kenya to come up with a modern toilet structure that can serve
the vocational training section to ease the congestion experienced currently at the secondary
section. We believe that the project, when funded, will contribute greatly in achieving the other
goals of the school.

11. Sustainability:
The project is a component of a larger project, the St Joseph Technical Secondary School. Given
that the project will be closely used by the community as well as the school, we anticipate that the
small charges from the community hall will help in maintaining the facilities. This will be
augmented by the school fees the parents pay every year and donations from well wishers.

Sustainability will also be obtained through sensitization of the beneficiaries on the wise utilization
of the structures to be constructed. Hygiene education and community laws will be enforced to
users to ensure effective outcomes.

Also, students will be sensitized with regard to cleaning. The school will enhance the cleaning
roster for the students and support staff who are responsible for cleaning the new school toilets.
