North Nicosia or Northern Nicosia is the capital and largest city of the de facto state # 1 - International Youth Center in Oberschleißheim / ATELIER 30
of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It is the northern part of the divided city Architects : ATELIER 30
of Nicosia and is governed by the Nicosia Turkish Municipality. As of 2011, North Nico- Area : 2430 m²

The competition site was located on the grounds of a former military airport near Oberschleißheim.
What made the site stand out especially was its close proximity to a conservation area.
The buildings are arranged in a well proportioned sequence with circulation routes and open spaces.
Aside from offering a space for lingering and conversation, it also serves as an exhibition space and vari-
ous events may be staged there.

HISTORY OF NICOSIA
Nicosia has been the capital of Cyprus since the tenth century A.C. also, mirrors the is-
lands' rich legacy. The old city, encompassed by the Venetian Walls of the sixteenth
century, contains a portion of the island's best instances of Byzantine, French Medie-
val, Venetian, Ottoman and British Colonial Architecture.

Political occasions during the most recent forty years have finished in the actual # 2 - Sticky Fingers / Rue Royale Architectes
parcel of Nicosia. Throughout the long term, the city has been living tradition of the is-
land's rich legacy and everywhere one can track down a token of the progression of
time. Neolithic establishing, old Greek and Roman remains, Byzantine houses of wor-

The fact that this project takes its name from a
celebrated rock music album is not just a musi-
cal allusion, but a direct reference to its form. In
the apparent simplicity of three elongated
wooden structures on a plinth, this social, cultur-
al and sports centre gave rise to multiple com-
plexities both in its construction and its func-
tions. It links the upper and lower parts of the dis-
trict, traversing the project's broad terraces.
The vegetation on this recently-urbanised project
is luxuriant, including some fine old trees with
which the building harmonises. The roof is an im-
portant aspect of the building, being integrated
into the slope and visible from most angles. The
covering of the three wooden units, like the fa-
cades, is in larch, and it conceals the technical
equipment installed on the roof, in contrast with
the greenery.

LEGIBILITY AND PREAMIBILITY
Legibility: the legibility of the area has 3 main sections , the old city which is very hard to
read since its an organic map layout, while the Yenişehir district is very uniform and
planned out, on the other hand Çağlayan district has very vague planning and hard to
read.
Permeability: permeability in Çağlayan district and strictly around the sight is very hard
to navigate and missing basic aspects of pedestrian access.
TOWNSCAPE
Visual environment: the monumental hierarchy of the buildings maintains clear juxtaposition be-
tween different types of buildings, where the old city is clearly separated from the modern area,
which is also separated from the British era buildings area, which is also clearly separated from the
Ottomans buildings and market area.
