DESIGN AN INQUIRY

Designing an inquiry to measure the thickness of a paper, surface area of any object
accurately. Firstly I will be designing an inquiry to try and find the best way to measure the
thickness of a paper.
With a single sheet of paper,
there is no scale to measure the
thickness of it as it could be less
than a millimeter. You can
measure the length of a single
A4 blank printing paper and the
width of a A4 blank printing
paper with a 30cm ruler, but it is
impossible to just measure the
thickness of the A4 blank
printing paper with a 30cm ruler
because it does not have a scale
that small, the thickness of a
single A4 paper is too thin even
for the millimeters. So, I have
designed a scientific inquiry to help find the thickness of a single A4 blank printing paper
accurately. You will need the following apparatus:
APPARATUS
1. 30cm ruler
2. 100 A4 blank printing papers
Commence by putting all the 100 A4 blank printing paper on top of each other and bundling
them together. Then, take your 30cm ruler and measure the height of the papers. For the sake
of this inquiry, I will give an example of a height you could find, which is 8cm. Once you
have gotten the height of the papers, you can now calculate the thickness of each paper.
Simply, divide the height of the 100 papers by the number of papers, which in this case is
100.
8 ÷ 100=0.08 cm

You may repeat this experiment three times, just to increase the accuracy and record your
findings in your data table like the one below.

DATA TABLE
Height of 100 A4 printing papers Divided by 100
8cm 0.08cm
7.8cm 0.087cm
8.2cm 0.028cm
Average 0.065cm

Rounded off is equal to 0.07 which in millimeters is 0.7mm

FINDING THE SURAFCE AREA OF AN OBJECT

Have you ever wondered how to find the surface area of an ordinary object? What exactly are
you supposed to measure and with what measuring instrument? In this inquiry, I will show
you how you can find the experiment of a standard cube.
In this experiment, I will use the following apparatus:
1. Cube (measuring 5cm on each side)
2. Calculator
To find the surface area of a cube, you must first calculate the area of one side of the cube.
The formula for the area of a cube is SxS (side x side), so
A=5×5=25cm2
A cube has 6 sides, therefore you must multiple 25cm by 6.
SA=25× 6=150 cm2
OR
25 + 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 +25 = 150cm2

Therefore, the surface area of a cube (measuring 5cm on each side) is 150cm.
FINDING THE VOLUME OF AN OBJECT
Every shape has its own formula to find it volume. For instance: Volume of a cylinder ¿ π r 2 h
and Volume of a cuboid¿ lwh. In this inquiry, I will find the volume of a juice box. I will use
the following apparatus:
1. Juice box (12cm height, 3.7cm width and 4.5cm length)
2. 30cm ruler (To measure the height, width and length of my juice box)
To find the volume of the juice box, you must first measure the height, length and the width
of juice box, since it is in the shape of a cuboid and the formula for finding the volume of a
cuboid is length x width x height.
For example:
12 ×3.7 × 4.5=199.8 cm 3

That is how you find the volume of a juice box.
