Do you agree that most contemporary artists are self-taught? Why or why not?
From my experiences of encountering artists especially contemporary artists, yes, I do believe
that most of them are self-taught. This is since the techniques they are utilizing are unique and new, methods and mediums that are developed in the modern and present era. They could not have possibly learned it from someone from an older art era. The skills they have developed are also from the challenges and opportunities brought by today, they were able to gain and train these skills to the best of their capabilities because of the current living situations we have. They may be inspired by older eras of art but they way they interpret and create their art is something they developed for themselves. Contemporary artists also have a lot of time with themselves to learn and create. With the art industry expanding and the community being more open to art, this gives contemporary artists the proper recognition and opportunities to improve their art. This is another reason why I agree that most contemporary artists are self-taught, they are exposed to different elements while having the option to learn and grow on their own. Most artists are even surprisingly in non-art related fields, they are in careers where art is not a major factor, and this is how I can see that they are self-taught since they go out of their non-art related fields to pursue something else that they are passionate about. Contemporary art has different techniques, mediums, and interpretations which make every artist unique. Most contemporary artists are self-taught because they are able to create around their personal experiences and perspectives, which is something that cannot be learned from another individual. With the numerous of different kinds of art, this proves how these artists are able to create another form of art from something that already exist with an added personal preference. The art industry continues to grow thanks to these artists who create and express themselves with passion, inspiring more people and allowing the appreciation for art to grow.
