HAZING INCIDENT
Adamson University on Tuesday, Feb. 28, confirmed the death of one of its students after a reported disappearance.

21-year-old Ryan Camanyang, a third year electrical

engineering student at AdU, said in a sworn affidavit
that he accepted a friend’s invitation to join the
fraternity last December due in part to the prospect of
forming connections. Camanyang said recruiting new
members also came with the promise of enduring fewer
“trads” or hits with a paddle during initiation rites.

“Mga benepisyo na pwede naming makuha tulad ng

merong mga professor na miyembro ng TGP na
makakatulong sa aming pag-aaral, pagkakaroon ng mga

ibibigay sa amin na bente kwatro trads (palo) pero kung
meron pang ibang ma-recruit ay hahatiin na lang ang 24
trads sa amin kaya kami napasali sa grupo,” he said in
the affidavit.

Camanyang claimed to have seen the lifeless body of

fellow AdU student John Matthew Salilig after they
underwent TGP’s initiation rites last month. He has
submitted to the National Bureau of Investigation
hundreds of pages of conversations in the chat group
he joined with other TGP members, which contained
details about the events leading to the supposed hazing
of neophytes.
In an official statement, Adamson said it has
conducted its own investigation and is working
with the authorities to further look into the
incident.

“We strongly urge the community to refrain from

sharing unverified information and help us pray
for the student’s bereft family during this
difficult time,” it added.

Although the University Administration did not

name the said student, its autonomous and
official student publication — The Adamson
Chronicle — identified him as John Matthew
Salilig, a 24-year-old Chemical Engineering
learner who went missing on Feb. 18, 2023. Salilig
was reportedly last seen at Jac Liner Bus
Terminal in Manila.

While grieving for his untimely passing, the

University strongly reminded all Adamsonians to
be “vigilant” with their activities whether inside
or outside the campus.

Jopia said the case — which was

was driving another vehicle, which carried

THE "master initiator" in the fraternity hazing that resulted in the death of 24-
year-old Adamson University student John Matthew Salilig underwent inquest
proceedings at the Department of Justice (DoJ) on Saturday.
Police said Daniel Perry, alias "Sting," was with Salilig from the beginning of the
hazing until Salilig's body was buried in Imus.
Perry surrendered to Cavite Gov. Juanito Victor "Jonvic" Remulla last Thursday.
Salilig's brother, John Michael, has filed a hazing complaint against Perry.
Another victim, Roi Osmond de la Cruz, filed a separate count of hazing against
Perry, based on the complaint submitted to DoJ prosecutors on Saturday.
Perry will remain in the custodial facility of the Biñan police. He will join six other
suspects who had been subjected to an inquest at the DoJ.
A 21-year-old student of Adamson University, who according to Biñan police is
the youngest among the four alleged hazing victims, also appeared at Perry's
inquest.
Salilig was laid to rest in Zamboanga City on Saturday.
Family members and hundreds of sympathizers attended the Mass for John
Matthew and his grandfather, Romulo Salilig, whose coffins lay side by side, at the
Metropolitan Immaculate Conception Cathedral.
"It should be brotherhood, not death," said Go in an interview after personally
aiding residents in Mendez, Cavite on Thursday.
He expressed his disappointment in the use of physical violence during fraternity
recruitment, saying that it is not a measure of one's ability to be a good member
of a fraternity or any organization.
"As parents, we send our children to school. We sacrifice and work in order to give
them a better future. Not for anyone to harm or kill them," he said.
Asked if the incident should be brought to the Senate for investigation, Go said he
is willing to participate in an inquiry if it did. However, the police should be
allowed to complete their investigation first.
Go said it is up to the Senate to determine if the Anti-Hazing Act should be
amended to prevent such incidents from occurring again in the future.
WITH JAVIER JOE ISMAEL
John Matthew was reported missing on February 18, the same day he underwent
hazing rites by the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity in Cavite City.
He was found to have died of hazing-related injuries.
On Friday, police confirmed that a person of interest implicated in the Salilig case
took his own life by hanging.
The person of interest was a member of Tau Gamma Phi but was not a student,
investigators said.
He was allegedly the driver of the gray AUV that brought Salilig's body to Imus
where it was buried in a shallow grave.
Sen. Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go has strongly denounced the death of
Salilig.
